The Columbus Republican Columbus, Indiana Thursday, November 29, 1877 Page 5 Obituary Under this head the Sentinel of Sunday last gave the following tribute to Mrs. J.C. Lyle: "A sweet and gentle life has passed away, and another Indiana home is shrouded in gloom. Mrs. Florence Lyle, wife of John D. Lyle, Esq., of Columbus, Indiana, is dead. This sad event occurred yesterday morning at four o'clock. Mrs. Lyle's maiden name was Jones, daughter of Elisha P. Jones, Esq., brother of Hon. Aquilla Jones, of this city. Mrs. Lyle had been twice married. By her former husband, Mr. Hutchings, she had one child-a son. Mrs. Lyle, at the time of her death, was about thirty-nine years of age. As a wife she was all that the holy relation signifies; as a mother, affectionate; as a member of society, alive to every good word and work. A life of greater beauty is seldom seen, or its influence felt in the homes of earth's pilgrims. But death comes to all. It appears cruel always, but especially so when it takes from our homes a wife and mother in the prime of her womanhood and usefulness. A host of friends, endeared by the gentle and sweet disposition of the deceased, will sympathize with the bereaved, and kind words will in a measure assuage their grief. But better still is the faith that looks beyond the tomb, promising a reunion where separations are unknown, in a city along whose streets funeral processions never pass, in a country where there are no cemeteries, and where Sickness, sorrow, pain and death Are felt and feared no more.
