The Republic Columbus, Indiana Thursday, April 12, 1900 Page 2 Obituary Hanna Mary New was born Sept. 24, 1881, and died April 4, 1900, aged 18 years, 6 months and 10 days. Her health began failing in February, 1899, but no decided illness prevailed until the beginning of the present calendar year. Then disease laid waste with quick and sure hand. May was made a member of the Trinity M.E. church in the winter season of '93 and was definitely converted one year later under the pastorate of Rev. J.L. Perry. To the claims of home and Sunday school and church she was faithful, and especially useful in song. Having graduated from the common schools, her ambition was to receive a higher education, but sickness came in the midst of study and brought great disappointment. Mary's life was singularly marked with rare qualities-full of tenderness and love and trust-always sincere and unselfish. She was good in her heart. Every day of youth was a promise of splendid womanhood; everybody was Mary's friend. This last illness was meekly, patiently, courageously borne. She hoped to get well, but with sure resignation to a higher will. Marvelously conscious to the last moment, choice opportunity was given for a final testimony. "I'm trusting in Jesus and I'm not afraid," she said. "I'll see Minnie in Heaven: you must meet me there." To each one she said "good-bye," and added "It's just like going to sleep." Her faith was meet for the great emergency. How much after Bryant's ideal: "Approach thy grave like on who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams." To us who remain, her life is a hope and an inspiration, and while her passing wounds, her example will "soothe and heal and bless."
