The Republic Columbus, Indiana Tuesday, June 20, 1899 Page 4 APPENDICITIS CAUSES DEATH. Herbert Thompson, a Well Known Young Man, Is Dead. Herbert J. Thompson, a well known and highly respected young man of this city, died very suddenly at the home of his pare3nts, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Thompson, at 1339 Maple Ave., Maple Grove, about 4:30 o'clock Monday evening, of appendicitis, aged nineteen years. He was in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. and had been recently promoted from mail transporter in this city to ticket seller at teh passenger station at Shelbyville. He was brought home from Shelbyville last Monday, June 12, on a stretcher. He rallied during last week and was able to go riding with some of his friends last Saturday. He took worse Sunday and continued to get weaker until his death. Herbert attended the Columbus high school and would have graduated with the class of '98 but stoppede school about six months before graduation to take a position on the railroad. He was morally an exceptionally fine fellow and had hosts of friends in this city. He leaves a father and mother and three sisters to mourn their loss. The time of the funeral of Herbert Thompson has not been definitely settled but it will probably take place late Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. E.B. Widger.
