Columbus Republic 10 Sep 2004 Dr. George Weinland Reeves Drive Dr. George C. Weinland, 81, of Reeves Drive died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Four Seasons Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. The city's first psychiatrist, Dr. Weinland came to Columbus in 1960 to be the first director of Bartholomew County Mental Health and Child Guidance Clinic, now known as Quinco Behavioral Health Systems. He served first as clinical director and then as executive director, retiring from the latter position in 1976 but remaining on staff on a consulting basis for the next seven years. He retired from private practice in 1990, and in 1997 Quinco named its new community-based psychiatric transitional group home "Weinland House" as a tribute to him. Dr. Weinland earned undergraduate and medical degrees at Indiana University. He was an active member of the medical staff of Bartholomew County Hospital, Bartholomew-Brown County Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Indiana Psychiatric Society and American Psychiatric Association which awarded him status as a Distinguished Life Fellow in 2003. He served as a major in the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War and was a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine from 1955 to 1981. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and after retirement participated in several medical mission trips to South America and Mexico. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Kamman officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street. Private inurnment will be at a later date at the church columbarium. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County or Quinco Consulting Foundation. Dr. Weinland was born in Hope Jan. 20, 1923, the son of Horace G. and Lessie Chitty Weinland. He married Mary E. Morrison June 8, 1947. Survivors include his wife; children, Laura Weinland Young of Cincinnati, Robert L. Weinland of Cleveland, Clare Weinland Moore of Columbus and Thomas M. Weinland of Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Rebecca and Annabeth Young, James, Joanna and Madeline Weinland and Charles Moore.He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Hyndman.
