Carroll County, Indiana - Cemetery
Whistler Cemetery
Lewis Farm Cemetery
Carroll County, IN
Located: Deer Creek Twp.
I am sure this refers to the Whistler Cemetery. Lewis Funkhouser was my father, and I own the farmland surrounding this cemetery.
William and Hannah Whistler, my great-great grandparents, purchased this land in 1853. All, except two, buried in the cemetery
are members of the Whistler family.
It is most commonly known as the Whistler Cemetery and secondly as the Whisler Cemetery. I have never seen Wistler as you list in
the Cemetery Name column. William Whistler always signed his name as Whisler. It seems the "t" was added when the family moved
to Indiana in 1856, and all his children and succeeding generations used the "t."
A church used to stand to the east of the cemetery. It was known as the Otterbin Church of the Brethren United in Christ. So 140
years ago the cemetery may have been known as the Otterbein Cemetery. But that is lost in history. The church building is still
standing. It was moved and converted to a corn crib at the farmstead to the NE of the cemetery.
The cemetery is particularly noted in Carroll County history due to the burial of William H. Whistler, a member of the Lady
Franklin Bay Expedition to the Arctic areas, 1881-1884. His funeral in 1884 was attended by the Governor of the State of
Indiana and by 2,500-3,000 people according to contemporary local newspaper accounts.
