HAMMOND CEMETERY
Charlestown Township, Clark County, Indiana

On June 3, 1999, Jimmy Keith, Charlestown Township Trustee, advised that he had been working for some time cleaning up a cemetery on Tunnel Mill Road (but NOT on the Boy Scout Reservation) and that the project was nearing completion.  He reported the following 19th Century gravemarkers:
        Rev. _______ Hammond
        Lloyd
        Fletcher

The rumor is that this Rev. Hammond is the man who performed a marriage ceremony for Indiana's first Governor, Jonathan Jennings.  The Indiana State Library's pre-1850 marriage database says Jonathan Jennings married Anny G. Hay in Clark County, IN on 8-8-1811 and he or another Jonathan Jennings married Clarissa Barbee in Clark Co. on 10-17-1827.  (I don't know if the Governor was married more than once or not.)

There are a number of small stones found here (sounds to me like they are probably footstones), bearing only initials -- LAH, FH, CJH, YH, JGR, etc.

Luanne Stahly <lpstahly@thepoint.net> visited the site on April 6, 2003.  She agrees this should be referred to as "Hammond Cemetery" and provided the following listing of stones found during her visit:

Rev. Rezin Hammond; born in Fredrick Co, Maryland on April 15,1788; died in Charlestown, Indiana on Nov. 5, 1871.

Ann T. Hammond, wife of Rev. R. Hammond; born in Harrisonburg, Virginia on September 16, 1794; died in Charlestown, Indiana on March 24, 1878.

Rev. and Mrs. Hammond's stone bears the following inscription:
Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord
For of such is the Kingdon of Heaven.
Also buried here are the following children of Rezin & Ann T. Hammond (all of these footstones are in a row):
Lloyd A. Hammond (footstone found:  "LAH")

Cinthia J. Hammond (footstone found:  "CJH")
Margaret J. Hammond (footstone found:  "MJH")
