On April 8, 2001, LuAnne Stahly was able to find a small cemetery in the middle of a field off Miles Road in Bethlehem Township.  It is located in Section 36, about 100 feet south of Miles Road.  The site is located about halfway between New Hope Church Road and Bud Road, off the east end of Miles Road.  Click here for a topographical map showing the approximate location of this cemetery, courtesy of www.topozone.com.

LuAnne reports that she was able to identify one stone as being that of a son of a family named SAGE.  She will provide additional information as soon as it is available.

Several members of the SAGE family are buried at New Hope Cemetery, also in Bethlehem Township.

At least two women whose maiden names were SAGE are buried at New Chapel Cemetery in Utica Township (see New Chapel index Parts One and Two).

We have found the following information in historical records relating to the SAGE family:

  SAGE, George T. 58 KY - William A. 33

Maybe George T. Sage was the father of William A. (33) and John J. (36).  Homes were very close to one another.

Also found Eli H. Sage (22) living in the household of John Bennet down in Utica Twp:

Maybe Eli is another son?????

This book shows Jeremiah SAGE owned land in Clark Co., Indiana, at Section 36, Township 2 N, Range 9E, sold on 8/20/1831 and recorded in Book 27, p. 469.

Elizabeth SAGE, buried at New Hope Cemetery, was Elizabeth Ann NEWKIRK, who married John J. SAGE on 4/11/1854 in Louisville, KY. She was on the 1880 census in Clark with John's brother, William A. SAGE.  She was John's second wife as his first was Margaret HAMMOND.

Eli SAGE was listed as the son of James SAGE on the 1850 Clark Co Census.

George SAGE, buried at New Hope Cemetery, was the son of John J. SAGE and Elizabeth Ann Newkirk SAGE.  This book indicates that John J. SAGE was born in 1824 and died before 1880, because Elizabeth was listed as a widow.  It is, of course, possible the dates listed in the New Hope Cemetery index are wrong and that this could be him.
