Fern Graber Acton

Fern G. Acton, 96, Washington, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday January 8, 2009, at the Washington Nursing Center. Born Sept., 3, 1912, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Albert and Dicey (Myers) Graber. A 1930 graduate of Washington High School, she was the catalog and credit manager at J.C. Penney for many years, retiring at age 65. She later was cashier for the school lunch program for 20 years. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and a former Gray Lady at Daviess Community Hospital. She was an avid bridge player and had bowled in several leagues. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Acton of Washington; a son-in-law, Sam Myers of Washington; a sister-in-law, Cleo Graber McCreary of Greensburg; two grandchildren, Karmen Sharpe of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kimberlee Fowler of Washington; three great-grandchildren, Erica Burkemper, Tanner Fowler and Tyler Sharpe; and one great-great-grandson, Levi Eric Burkemper. Her husband, Charles B. Acton, whom she married Aug. 29, 1934, died Feb. 7, 1967. One daughter, Sue Myers; one sister, Ruth Graber; two brothers, A.C. Graber and Darrell Graber; and one sister-in-law, Helen Graber, are also deceased. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Gill Chapel. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery.
