Samuel David Burkhart Jr.

Samuel David Burkhart Jr., 78, Rt. 3, died at 8:33AM Saturday at Hillside Manor Nursing Home. Born Oct. 30, 1926, in Daviess County, he was the son of Essie Lula Burch and Samuel David Burkhart Sr. A 1944 graduate of Washington High School, he had attended Purdue University. A lifelong farmer, he was and avid horseman and was active in many farm and community organizations. He was a 50-year member of Bethany Christian Church, where he had served as deacon, elder, and trustee of the church. He had been a Sunday school teacher and had been a trustee of the Bethany Cemetery for many years. He had served as a trustee for the Art Morris South India Missions and was a 50-year member of the IOOF Lodge. He had served on the Washington Community School Board. Survivors include his wife, Rita Ruth (Loughmiller) Burkhart, whom he married Oct. 2, 1946; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mariruth and Dr. Douglas Webster of Chicago and Sharon Roach of Evansville; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary S. and Jeanna Burkhart of Washington; four grandchildren, Jonathan Roach of Cannelburg, and Jessica Wright, Kasey Burkhart and Kensay Burkhart, all of Washington; and one great granddaughter, Audrey Wright of Washington. One son, David Joseph Burkhart; three sisters, Wilma Burkhart, Doris VanWinkle and Shirley Burkhart; and two brothers, Ralph Burkhart and Vernon Burkhart, are deceased. The funeral will be at 10:30AM Wednesday at Gill Chapel, with Bros. Ben Bean and Ronald Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call from 4PM to 8PM today and after 9AM Wednesday until time of service. Preferred memorials are to the American Diabetes Association.
