Daniel Jackson


R DANIEL JACKSON was born in New York State on March 4, 1788 and migrated to Champaign County, Ohio around 1810. The Poll Tax for 1811 for Champaign County lists him as an elector in Concord Township. On May 21, 1812, he married to Espa Colbert who went by the name of Alice. Daniel enlisted in the Ohio Militia, Philip Kiser’s Company, Col. McPherson’s Regiment on September 19, 1912 and served from that date to October 19, 1812 and from August 12, to September 21, 1813. On April 24, 1879, Alice Colbert Jackson made an affidavit before the clerk of the Daviess County, Indiana Clerk of Court to secure a pension as the widow of a veteran of the War of 1812. She reiterates his service the war referred to above and describes Daniel as being about twenty-three years of age at the time of his service, as having dark hair and dark gray eye, fair complexion, and about six-foot tall. She says that after Daniel’s discharge from the service, they lived in Champaign County, Ohio for about four years where he was a farmer, then moved to the State of Kentucky for about two years and then moved on to Indiana.. Daniel and Alice Jackson settled in Harrison Township, Daviess County, Indiana. He acquired several hundred acres of land and on May 29, 1854 platted a town that he named Hudsonville. The plat contained lots fronting on streets that he named Poplar, Main, Walnut and Jackson Streets. On June 25, 1856, he added an Eastern Addition from lands owned by Nelson Jackson and a Western Addition from lands owned by him. On June 17, he conveyed land to the Trustees of the Methodist E. Church on June 17, 1856 for a church that was designated as Jackson’s Chapel. On April 28, 1855, Daniel Jackson applied for bounty land to which he was entitled as a result of his service in the War of 1812 and pursuant to an Act of Congress approved March 3, 1833 and on April 10, 1856 was awarded 160 acres. Daniel and Alice Jackson had ten children; to-wit, Julia Ann, b. 10/13/1815, Ulysses E., b. June 21, 1817, William J., born November 17, 1922, Nelson, born abt. 1825, Malissa, born 1828, John J., born February 13, 1830, David Nehemiah, born November 28, 1831, Mahalia, born abt. 1832, Milton, born 1836, Rosalie, born 1840. David and Alice raised a large family and lived the rest of their lives in the Hudsonville area. Daniel died October 17, 1877 and Alice died January 6, 1879. Both are buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery close to Hudsonville.
