Gladys J. Mattingly

Gladys J. Mattingly, 92, of Washington, died at 4:41 a.m. Sunday at Daviess Community Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1916, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of William and Alice (Davidson) Purdue. She was a member of Washington Ebenezer General Baptist Church. She had worked for Graham Brothers and retired from Daviess County Hospital after 28 years of service. She was an avid sports fan. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn Gregory, Janet and Ira Mattingly and George Strange, all of Washington; four sons and daughters-in-law, Danny O’Bryan and his friend, Lisa, of Indianapolis, Robert and Kay Davis, Alan and Bonita Mattingly, and Steve and Karen Mattingly, all of Washington; one sister, Ermel Wonder of Washington; one brother, Lavon Purdue of Washington; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Robert L. Davis, whom she married Feb. 27, 1934, died July 5, 1948. Her second husband, William “Bud” Mattingly, whom she married Dec. 21, 1957, died May 21, 2007. One daughter, Leanna Strange; one grandson, Nigel Hasler O’Bryan; and one great-grandson, Joseph Bernard, are also deceased. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer General Baptist Church, with Bro. Jim Williams officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ed Lee Mortuary and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church.
