Robert Donald Smith

Robert D. Smith, 84, formerly of Plainville, died at Oak Village, Oaktown, Tuesday at 10:20PM. He had been in failing health for several years. The funeral will be at 2:30PM Tuesday at the Poindexter-Hall and McClure Funeral Home, Washington. The Rev. Donald Smith will officiate. Interment will be in the Plainville Cemetery. Friends may begin calling at 10AM Tuesday. He was born on March 28, 1913 in Daviess County to George W. and Carrie M. (Pierce) Smith. He married his first wife, Wanita Osmon, on Nov. 23, 1934 and she preceded him in death in 1967. He then married his second wife, Helen Walls, on Dec. 22, 1967 and she preceded him in death in 1988. Mr. Smith was a farmer/miller working at the Plainville Milling Co. and retiring in 1975. He attended Frady United Methodist Church and was a former Plainville Lions Club member. Surviving are his children, a son, the Rev. Donald R. Smith, Martinsville; two daughters, Linda Rutherford and Carolyn Baker, both of Lafayette; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives; a sister, Ethel Gilliatt; a grandson, Jeremy Robert Smith and a granddaughter, Carrie Baker Klein. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Oak Village N.C., Oaktown or Southern Indiana United Methodist Church Foundation.
