Phoebe Jane Chestnut Spurgeon

Mrs. Phoebe Jane Spurgeon, 71, wife of James L. Spurgeon of near Lyons, died Friday afternoon at 3:20 o'clock at the family home, following a month's illness. She had been seriously ill for two weeks. Born near Odon on June 21, 1871, she was the daughter of Felix and Harriet (Wade) Chestnut and married Mr. Spurgeon on April 9, 1893. Three children were born to the union, two being survivors. They are Carl Spurgeon of Linton and Mrs. Zelma Brosman of Bloomington. There also are eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Harriet Kettery of near Plainville. Three brothers and two sisters are deceased. The deceased was a member of the Lyons Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Lyons. The family had moved from Daviess County to the Lyons community 14 years ago. Funeral services are to be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Lyons Methodist Church, burial following in Raglesville Cemetery. Friends may call at the family residence, where the body was returned late this afternoon after preparation at the Poindexter & Wampler Funeral Home in Sandborn.
