In 1821 Decatur County, along with Shelby, Rush and Henry Counties, was carved out of the southern part of Delaware County, and Greensburg was chosen in 1822 as the county seat. The first settlers chose land along the rivers in the northern tier of townships. The standard history of the county is Lewis Harding, History of Decatur County Indiana(1915). The city of Decatur, Indiana is not in Decatur County, but in Adams County

I am Traci Ashley and I am your County Coordinator. Please email for comments, complaints, compliments, suggestions, submissions, etc. I do not live in Decatur County and can not do research for you. Please see the information for posting queries. I'm very interested in providing genealogical information to you through this website, but I can't do it alone. Please consider submitting your information or contribute in whatever way you would like.
The pages of this website can be searched. To search for a phrase, enclose it in quotation marks, e.g. "St Omer", but searching first for surname only may elicit more useful results. Use lower case or mixed cases, but not all capitals.
