Burton Brown, son of Henry and Aseneth (Knight) Brown, was born in Marion County, Ohio, Aug. 23, 1832, and was about five years of age when his parent moved to De Kalb County. He was reared on the farm, receiving his education in the district schools. He was married April 15, 1855, to Harriet J. Squiers, a native of Sandusky County, Ohio, born Oct. 4, 1836, a daughter of William A. and Susan (Wyatt) Squiers, early settlers of the county. Her mother died Aug. 12, 1863, and her father now makes her house his home. He is eighty-six years of age, and with the exception of some of he infirmities of old age, is in the enjoyment of good health. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have had a family of nine children---William H., Sidney Susan, Phebe Dorcas, Stephen B., John (died at the age of seven years) and Russell W. Mr. Brown has a pleasant home on section 2. He has been successful financially, and by his upright dealing has gained the confidence of his fellow-townsmen. In 1881 he was obliged to have his left leg amputated as the effects of a fever sore, and is now obliged to live retired from active farm life, although he still superintends the work.
