Calkin was born in Essex County, N.Y., Nov. 27, 1830, the sixth son and twelfth child of Calvin and Kezia (Kellogg) Calkin. In 1833 his parents moved to Sandusky County, Ohio, and in 1840 to De Kalb County, Ind., locating on 160 acres of wild land in Richland Township. Here our subject grew to manhood and was early inured to the hardships and privations of life on a frontier farm. He was married March 27, 1851, to Matilda Brown, daughter of Levi and Jane (Peak) Browns, who came to De Kalb County from Seneca County, Ohio, in 1850. After his marriage he settled on a part of his father’s farm where he still remains. In 1873 he engaged in the manufacture of tile, brick and lumber, which he still continues, at present, however, is also superintending his farm. He has 110 acres of land all well improved, with a good residence and farm building. Mr. and Mrs. Calkin have eight children---Horace J., Milo L., Frank C., Lindal G., Adna W., Charles F., Mary J., and Rosa May. Mr. Calkin in his political affiliations is a Republican.
