Mitchell, deceased, was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Oct.10, 1818, a son of John Mitchell, who was a native of Pennsylvania, but a pioneer of Ohio. He was reared a farmer, but obtained a good education, completing it at the Leesburg, Ohio, High School. He taught school nine winters, devoting the summers to agricultural pursuits. In 1853 he moved to De Kalb County Ind., and settled on a farm in Franklin Township, where he died Oct. 23, 1860. He was a devoted Christian, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was an upright, progressive citizen, a liberal supporter of all charitable institutions, benevolent to the poor, and a kind and obliging neighbor. He was married May 22, 1844, to Rebecca Knisely, a native of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, born Feb. 25, 1823, a daughter of David Knisely, and early settler of that county. To Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were born eight children, but three of whom are living---William K., a physician of Ligonier, Ind.; John D., a farmer, residing on the old homestead, and Thirza.
