Daniel Phelps, farmer and stock-raiser, Fairfield Township, was born in Stark County, Ohio, Feb. 28, 1830, a son of William and Magdeline (Marsh) Phelps, the former a native of Maryland, of English descent, and the latter of Virginia, of German descent. He attended the public schools till ten years of age, when his father died and he was then obliged to rely upon his own resources, and from that time till his marriage worked for farmers by the month. He was married Nov. 20, 1853, to Hannah, daughter of Peter Freed. In the fall of 1854 they moved to De Kalb County, Ind., where his wife died. Their only child died in infancy. He was again married June 20, 1858, to Delilah Risely, a native of Stark County, Ohio, daughter of Elias and Catherine (Livingston) Risely. They have had three children; two are living---Amanda and Lovina. One child died in infancy. Mr. Phelps has one of the best farms in the township, which he has brought from heavily timbered condition to a state of advanced cultivation.
