Was born in Bedford County, Pa., Nov. 14, 1829, a son of Jacob and Margaret (Burkheimer) Smith, native of Pennsylvania. His father was born March 2, 1803, and his mother Dec.24, 1805. In 1831 his parents moved to Richland County, Ohio, where the father died July 16, 1863, and the mother in 1876. They had a family of nice children---Fanny, Henry, Polly, Levi, Aaron, John, Frederick, Susanna and Maria. They were prominent and consistent members of the German Baptist church. Henry Smith was reared on a farm and received such education as the district school of his day afforded. In 1860 he moved to DeKalb County, Ind., and bought 120 acres of land, on which he has since resided. He has since bought another tract of 120 acres, and now has one of the finest farms in the township. Mr. Smith was married April 30, 1854, to Miss Susanna, daughter of Jacob and Susanna Leedy, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Maryland. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been born nine children---Margaret, Levi, Jacob, Mary, Lydia, Mahala, Lodema, Amanda and John. Levi died Aug. 29, 1869. Mr. Smith is one of the self-made men of the county.
