Smith, section 23, Franklin Township, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Sept. 20, 1839. In the fall of 1844 his father, Adam Smith, came with his parents to De Kalb County and settled in Franklin township where he still lives. John H. Smith was reared and educated in this county, attending the log-cabin schools in the winter, when his services were not required on the farm. He early acquired a knowledge of agriculture, and since attaining manhood has devoted his attention to that industry, and now owns a good farm of ninety acres. He was married Oct. 7, 1859, to Margaret Slentz, daughter of Henry Slentz, an early settler of Franklin Township. Their only child, Alice Ida, died in the second year of her age. Mr. Smith enlisted in Company F, Forty-fourth Indiana Infantry and served three years. He participated in the t battle of Chickamauga, but soon after was detailed to the Quartermaster’s department.
