The following is a transcript of the daily diary of Charles E. M. Walker. It has been copied exactly as the information was written in the original manuscript. Charles was born in Stark County, Ohio on 30 October 1863, the eldest son of George W. and Caroline (Neidig) Walker. Charles married Nancy Bell Kagey on 17 February 1891 in De Kalb County, Indiana where they spent the remainder of their lives. Nancy was the daughter of Christian B. and Mary Ann (Treesh) Kagey. Nancy was born on 15 April 1870 in De Kalb County, Indiana and was raised on a farm in Richland County, De Kalb County, Indiana. Three children were born of this marriage, Dora; Olive June; and Jesse.

tue 9 I went to Auburn as juror dismissed till monday 15th came back to Fathers.

wed 10 All night at Fathers, came home Dora sick, Ma Frank and Sarah here.

thu 11 Hung up meat, took Fathers buck home John went a long.

fri 12 Up home for dinner, thrashed a little corn, loafed rest of time.

tue 16 Auburn on jury till past 11 oclock at night, decided in favor of Shoner. At Fathers rest of night. Rain

wed 17 Commenced on the Jennings will case went to Fathers to stay all night. rain

thu 18 Still at the Jennings will case, at Fathers. rain

fri 19 Still at the Jennings will case, at Fathers.

sat 20 Court adjourned till monday Nancy came after me. rain

sun 21 R C to church, I opened church for indeavor.

mon 22 John took me to Auburn Jennings will case, out to Fathers.

tue 23 Auburn on jury.

wed 24 On Jury, stormy cold snowed.

thu 25 On Jury, got through with witnesses.

fri 26 On jury, Lawyers made their pleas we went in jury room at 4 oclock this eve.

sat 27 Aareed at 4 oclock this morn handed in decision, settled up and went home, will stands as made.

sun 28 Up to Pas for dinner, Sams here to spend eve.

mon 29 Helped Pa kill a hog, halled wood 1 load of husked corn, snowed.

tue 30 Loafed, went up to Faringtons for sugar and matches, snowed.

wed 31 Over to Sams, Sam and I cut wood about 1 hour.

February 1894

thu 1 Pa and I halled straw in barn till noon, I husked corn.

fri 2 Chopped down and trimmed trees, Sam helped a little while.

sat 3 Frank and I sawed and split wood.

sun 4 Nancy went to S S, Pas and Sams were here.

mon 5 Sam and I sawed and split wood.

tue 6 I chopped wood till noon, grubbed in swamp.

wed 7 Helped lay Uncle Sehner out, Pa Frank and I fixed seats in church.

thu 8 John Rohm Frank Lawhead and I went to Garrett and to Stonestreets.

fri 9 Chored around till noon, went to funeral, Uncle Sehner berried, met at house at 1 oclock.

sat 10 Halled wood 1 load for Sams 1 for me Frank helped, after dinner we went to Corrnna.

sun 11 R, C, S, S. Nancy went to funeral played Orpha Essie Frank Dell Haines John Rohm were here, Frank Hime here begging money to build house. George Keen burried 1 oclock.

mon 12 Frank Lawhead Frank Kagey John Rohm were here, blustry snowed all day.

tue 13 Frank and I chopped poles,

wed 14 Settled with Israel Groh for threshing, Frank and I chopped poles, Nancy went to church. snowed

thu 15 Frank and I chopped poles, I helped Frank hall hay from Norrises 1 load 1030 lbs. snow

fri 16 Went down home to see about getting Sleds to hall wood, Frank and I chopped poles.

sat 17 Frank and I halled wood 2 loads, Nancy played for the Ollingers funeral, Frank and I went to Corunna.

sun 18 Mary Kagey here last night, R, C, S, S, opened church for Endeavor and Preaching.

mon 19 Frank and I halled poles 2 lds wood 1 load, Nancy and I went down home.

tue 20 Frank Boren and I went to Auburn, made frame for grind stone.

wed 21 Came home from Fathers, Frank and I ground axes, Pa and Preacher here, went to church.

thu 22 Halled straw from Lee Rowlands for Sam, Frank helped, halled 2 loads.

fri 23 Frank Lawhead and I halled poles, 9 loads.

sat 24 Frank Lawhead and I halled poles 4 loads, John Rohm Frank Lawhead Frank Boren and I went to Auburn.

sun 25 R, C, S, S, Nancy went over to Irve Lockwoods alter Sunday School.

mon 26 Chopped poles, Sam helped this afternoon.

tue 27 Sam and I chopped poles all day.

wed 28 Halled poles 5 loads, Sam helped this afternoon halled 4 loads.

March 1894

thu 1 Went to Waterloo to mill for Pas Sam and me, 4 bu in each grist, Went to Auburn to see Charlie Glazier.

fri 2 Chopped poles.

sat 3 Husked corn till noon, R C to meeting, Nancy and I went to Corunna.

sun 4 R C to S Sand communion, Nancy and I joined church, Fathers Pas and J. F. Kagey were here, I opened church for endeavor, rain

mon 5 Husked corn, Frank Lawhead helped, halled hay for Sj Lawhead, 1 load halled it from the Lehner place.

tue 6 Sorted corn, measured out 36 bushels of oats for C B Kagey to pay for oats I borrowed for seed last spring, rain.

wed 7 Halled wood from Sams 1 load, made halter for colt, filled ash hopper, piled wood on porch.

thu 8 Went to Keens for buggy pole, Frank Kagey and I went to Auburn to see Charlie Glazier. Last night snowed 1/2 inch.

fri 9 Took Henry Keens buggy pole home, Sam Frank and I cut wood, went to H H Dawsons for buggy pole, stopped at Norrises, Nancy to Norrises.

sat 10 Went to see Glaziers farm Nancy and Frank Boren went a long, borrowed George Feaglers buggy, went to Ezra Rohms to stay all night.

sun 11 At Ezes Fathers and Franks came, I am sick, took sick last night.

mon 12 Done chores, took Dawsons buggy pole home, in bed nearly all day, sick, Pa and Ky here a while this eve.

tue 13 In bed nearly all day, Frank Lawhead fixed pig pen for me.

wed 14 Loafed till noon, went to Auburn, rented Charlie Glaziers farm.

thu 15 Went to Lue Olingers sale, Perry and Frank Eldredge dehorned my cows.

fri 16 Piled wood over to Sams, went to corunna to get wagon and plow, Sam and Frank went along, Sam baled.

sat 17 Went to Auburn to see Charlie Glazier to see when I could move, got dinner at Fathers went back to Auburn.

sun 18 R, C, S, S, and to church, Sam Sarah Orpha and Del Haines here for dinner, sprinkled rain.

mon 19 Nancy and I went to Corunna, went to Auburn to see Charlie Glazier, Ma Frank John and Frank Lawhead here.

tue 20 Helped Frank and John stretch wire along north side of orchard, went to Auburn to see Glazier, F Lawhead along.

wed 21 Went to Auburn to see Glazier, Nancy went down to Frank Borens, I got my dinner to Fathers.

thu 22 Nancy and I went over to Sams, rained this forenoon.

fri 23 Nancy and I went to Henry Neidigs, Al Freed and I went to Ashley. cold wind.

sat 24 At Henry Neidigs all night, went down to Bens, Ben and I went to Hudson, came home. cold wind.

sun 25 R, C, S, S, down home, Frank Boren and I went over to Ez Rohms to get him help me move. blustry cold all day snow.

mon 26 Sam and I brought load down to Glaziers, Nancy and Sarah packed goods.

tue 27 Father, Ez, Sam, and Frank Kagey each halled a load for me, Sams and Frank and Ma stayed all night.

wed 28 Went back after load of corn and oats. Frank Lawhead Frank and Obe Boren drove stock for me. snowed about 4 inches.

thu 29 Frank Boren Frank Lawhead and I cut wood, Frank Lawhead halled wood, F Boren and I helped Nancy.

fri 30 Took F Boren home, Frank fixed fence in barn yard trimmed oak top in field east of barn.

sat 31 Frank and I cut out a ton of hay, cut wood. sprinkled rain.

April 1894

sun 1 Mt Olive to church.

mon 2 Chored around, fixed fence east of farm, Frank halled manure till noon 10 loads started the plow.

tue 3 Built fence east of barn, Frank plowed, sprinkled rain.

wed 4 Went to Auburn and up to Pas after load of my stuff Nancy and Frank went a long. Sprinkled rain.

thu 5 Cut meat for Nancy, grubbed fence row, Frank plowed, Stormy snow.

fri 6 Set posts for garden fence, Frank plowed, Frank and I went to literary, Nancy went over to Shuts.

sat 7 Tore down fence north of lane, went with Carnahans to Auburn, Frank plowed.

sun 8 At home,

mon 9 Went to Auburn got timber for hay rack, Frank went along, went over to Millers sawmill. drizzly rain.

tue 10 Made hay rack, drizzly rain all day, snow this eve.

wed 11 Went to Orve Lockwoods sale, Nancy went as far as Dans, I got my dinner there. snow and rain.

thu 12 Frank and I pried up summer kitchen, stretched wire on north side of garden, went to Millers saw mill for pickets 1000.

fri 13 Frank and I built picket fence till about 3 o clock then we went to Auburn.

sat 14 Sowed oats Frank drug, all day, after noon I finished building garden fence.

sun 15 Up to Pas for dinner, R C to church. Rev Pattie preached.

mon 16 Frank finished dragging in oats, plowed and drug garden started to plow corn ground, I grubbed fence row, worked in garden.

tue 17 Frank plowed for corn, I worked in garden, chored a round barn, set 18 posts nailed on boards.

wed 18 Sawed wood, went fishing, Frank halled wood, and plowed, I chored around barn, rained thunder storm.

thu 19 We both chored around till noon then we halled a load of hay Frank went to store for can of oil I fixed up shanty.

fri 20 Frank plowed all day, I trimmed tree tops and looked over the woods till noon, then shelled seed corn. drizzly

sat 21 Frank and I sawed wood till noon, I went to Auburn Marion Shutt went along, Frank loafed. rain.

sun 22 At home all day, will Burns was here a while, sprinkled rain drizzly and rainy all day.

mon 23 Went to Sedan to see Eli, came back to Ezzes for dinner Nancy went as far as Ezzes, Frank split and piled wood gathered stone.

tue 24 Frank and I sawed ground chunks till noon, Frank plowed, I split ground chunks Frank marked out truck patch, I gathered stone.

wed 25 Frank halled wood ground chunks x steaks and plowed, I helped Frank to load and burnt brush grubbed stone planted potatos.

thu 26 Frank plowed all day, I made a sled to hall drag on, planted potatos Nancy helped, fixed up summer kitchen.

fri 27 Frank plowed all day, I worked in garden, started land for Frank grubbed fence row, set posts Frank helped after supper.

sat 28 Frank plowed all day, I went to Auburn, Father and Mother and John Rohm came to stay all night.

sun 29 At home all day It rained last night- thundered and stormed some.

mon 30 Frank drug all day, I white washed the house for Nancy.

May 1894

tue 1 Frank drug all day, I took the heifer over to Milts, helped Nancy in house, worked at corn marker. drizzly rain.

wed 2 Went up to Pas after corn oats and potatos stopped at Sams and down home, Nancy and Frank went along.

thu 3 Frank drug and marked out I finished making marker, shelled seed corn. frost this morn, Eais this eve.

fri 4 Frank finished marking out then planted I planted till noon then went to Auburn for planter planted after I got home.

sat 5 Frank and I put down carpet planted corn till it rained. Frank sprouted and cut potatos, I helped Nancy around house, rained

sun 6 At home all day, Nancy went over to Milts a while this after noon, rain

mon 7 Frank halled manure till noon and I ditched, we both planted corn this after noon. rained at noon.

tue 8 Frank hall manure all day. I ditched all day.

wed 9 Frank plowed all day, I tore out fence around lot west of farm, planted corn and potatos.

thu 10 Frank plowed all day, I planted corn and potatos, nailed boards on fence north of lane. rained this eve.

fri 11 Frank plowed all day, I went up to Fathers after horse collar and sheep shears, rode to and from Auburn with May Carnahan

sat 12 Frank plowed halled wood 2 loads, and drug, I fixed collar helped hall wood and worked at boat.

sun 13 At home till noon, Nancy and I went to Cedarville to baptising.

mon 14 Frank drug and boated, I finished boat grubbed fence row.

tue 15 Frank boated and drug, set out cabbage plants, I grubbed fence row went over to Millers saw mill. rain.

wed 16 Frank built fence and ditched, Nancy and I went to Auburn and to Fathers for dinner, up to Pas, rain.

thu 17 Frank ditched, we were at Pas all night went to Sams for dinner brought organ along home.

fri 18 Frank drug boated and marked out, I finished hay rack, Frank and I halled a load of hay. rain

sat 19 Frank helped Nancy in house, helped Milt load hogs, went with Burns to Auburn, I chored all day, snow and rain

sun 20 Frank and Dans came last night went home this eve, drizzly rain all day.

mon 27 Frank and I sawed and split posts and steaks 144 posts 110 stakes, drizzly all day this eve it rained.

tue 22 Frank and I sawed and split wood about 3 cords. rained from noon till about 4 oclock, rained this eve again.

wed 23 Frank went up home, Pa Ma Orpha Essie and Maud came, Essie stayed here, I mowed the yard, rained this forenoon.

thu 24 Frank and I built fence, Frank halled wood 1 load ground chunks 1 load. sprinkled rain a very little.

fri 25 Frank marked out then he helped me plant corn and potatos. sprinkled rain.

sat 26 Frank drug boated and marked out patch south of ditch, I sheared sheep Frank and I planted corn, rain.

sun 27 Frank took Essie home, Nancy and I were home all day. rained this after noon.

mon 28 Frank replanted corn planted beans and pumpkin seed hoed potatos, I plowed potatos went up to Fathers after team,

tue 29 Frank halled rails and stone plowed corn, I plowed all day.

wed 30 Frank plowed corn all day, I finished plowing for buckwheat and plowed in summer fallow.

fri 1 Frank plowed corn and went over to the grocery, I plowed and piled rails and brush.

sat 2 Frank plowed corn and grubbed fence row, I plowed summer fallow till noon, went to Auburn and to Fathers, took Fathers.

sun 3 Sam and Sarah came, team home.

mon 4 Frank hoed in garden and built fence, I worked on the roads.

tue 5 Frank helped hall load of posts and load of hay then he built fence, I took load of hay to Auburn for C. P. Glazier.

wed 6 Frank helped load hay and built fence, I took hay to Auburn for Glazier, Nancy went up to Sams stayed all night.

thu 7 Frank hunted for his pocket book and set posts, I came home from Sams and halled posts 2 lds wood 1 ld stakes 1 load.

fri 8 Frank built fence, I drug and plowed corn.

sat 9 Frank plowed corn, boated and drug buckwheat patch, I cleaned up the house, went to Auburn and to Fathers.

sun 10 At Fathers last night, went up to Pas and to Church.

mon 11 Frank drug and built fence, I drug and sowed buckwheat, went to Frakestraws and to Fathers and to Auburn got flory shod.

tue 12 Frank drug and built fence, I sowed buckwheat and boated till noon plowed corn in after noon.

wed 13 Frank and I halled stakes and posts he built fence and I plowed corn, we went fishing after supper.

thu 14 Frank built fence and plowed corn, I plowed truck patch and went over to Jake Borens filed saw ground ax went fishing

fri 15 Frank plowed corn all day, I hoed corn cabbage and potatos in truck patch.

sat 16 Frank plowed corn till noon afternoon he went with Lydia and may to Auburn, I dug dock till noon Nancy and I went to Auburn.

sun 17 Nancy and I at home all day, thundered sprinkled rain.

mon 18 Frank and I sawed logs and halled rails to finish fence along road and halled rails for wood.

tue 19 Frank hoed potatos and helped me load logs, I halled logs to mill 3 loads 1 load of lumber home.

wed 20 Frank plowed corn, I framed at milk house, went to sawmill after supper.

thu 21 Frank plowed corn, I finished framing milk house hoed corn and potatos, stormed sprinkled rain.

fri 22 Frank plowed corn, I set up corn after him.

sat 23 Frank drug summer fallow hoed corn, I hoed corn went to Auburn, Sam and Sarah came.

sun 24 Sams and us went to Mt. Olive to Church. Rained about noon

tue 26 Frank plowed corn, I went to sawmill for load of lumber worked at milk house, rain.

wed 27 Frank plowed corn, I worked at milk house till supper, went with Milts to Auburn.

thu 28 Frank plowed corn, I roofed milk house.

fri 29 Frank plowed corn, I made door for milk house and garden gate.

sat 30 Frank and I picked gooseberries and cherries, Frank hoed potatos, Nancy and I went to Auburn, Frank and Berts came.

July 1894

sun 1 Franks Berts and Obe were here, rained nearly all day.

mon 2 Frank plowed till supper then picked cherries, I picked cherries till supper then I plowed.

tue 3 Frank picked cherries till noon then he went up home after a horse, I plowed all day.

wed 4 Frank went to St Joe to picnic and to Auburn, Nancy and I went up home to rig up the binder I cut 4 rounds.

thu 5 Frank and the rest of us went up home to cut wheat, we went down to Sixteen to a festival.

fri 6 We cut wheat and came home.

sat 7 Frank picked cherries and cut wood till noon then he went to Auburn to get suit of clothes I helped Nancy went to Auburn x up home.

sun 8 Up to Fathers came last night picked huckle berries.

mon 9 Frank and I went up home to cut my rye Dora went along, we stayed in Auburn and got barney shod.

tue 10 Frank and I cut rye all day.

wed 11 Frank and I finished cutting rye till noon, came home, Frank picked cherries, I mowed.

thu 12 Frank picked cherries, I mowed we took in hay 3 small loads then I mowed again, Frank done chores.

fri 13 I mowed till noon, Frank picked cherries, Sam came to help us, we took in hay after dinner 6 loads.

sat 14 Sam mowed, Frank chopped wood on wood pile, I went to Auburn, after dinner we halled hay 4 loads.

sun 15 Sam went home last night, Nancy and Dora went along, I was at home all day today.

mon 16 Frank mowed till noon, Sam and Nancy came, Sam and I worked at granary till noon, halled hay, Frank and I went to Huntertown with load of hay.

tue 17 Frank raked hay fields, halled in the hay and worked corn, Sam and I roofed south side of granary, went up home to hall wheat.

wed 18 Frank and I halled wheat 7 loads, Pa mowed a way for us.

thu 19 Frank and I halled wheat, Father and Frank helped, threshed my rye 79 bu, we helped Sam thresh part of his, rain stopped us.

fri 20 At Fathers last night, came home, Frank plowed corn, I picked cherries, showery all day rain.

sat 21 Frank loafed all day, I plowed till supper then Nancy and I went to Auburn, John Rohm came.

sun 22 At home all day, John here he went home this eve, Nathan Milt Marion and Albert Hathaway here to see ditch.

mon 23 Frank plowed corn and boated, I made bell strap patched my shoes Nancy and I went up to Fathers.

tue 24 Frank hoed sweet corn in garden, Nancy and I went from Fathers up to Pas after ry brought home.

wed 25 Frank plowed till noon, Pa and Ma brought binder down, Sheffer here for dinner, Frank and I cut oats.

thu 26 Frank and I halled wheat for Marion Shutt and stacked straw, Nancy and Frank went to Auburn after supper.

fri 27 Frank and I cut oats till noon, Frank plowed and boated, I loafed Mrs Freeman and Mrs Hilky here.

sat 28 Frank boated till noon then went over to Milts, I went to Auburn, Orpha Essie Alice Treesh Page x All Hathaway and Levi Hoover here.

sun 29 Over to Milts to party last night, At home all day

mon 30 Frank pulled weeds, I took rye up to Auburn went up to Fathers Dora went along.

tue 31 Frank halled manure till noon him and I went over to sawmill Nancy went down to Jennies.

August 1894

wed 1 Frank loafed sick, I halled manure till noon drug.

thu 2 Frank drug all day, I built milk trough and loafed, Nancy came home from Jennies.

fri 3 Frank halled manure, I loafed till four oclock then I went to Huntertown.

sat 4 Frank and I halled manure till supper, Nancy and I went to Auburn and to Frank Borens.

sun 5 Frank and I stayed at home, Nancy Maggie and Fathers went over to Ez Rohms.

mon 6 Halled manure, Frank plowed I went to Stoners mill.

tue 7 Frank plowed and drug, I cleaned fence row and went to Auburn.

wed 8 Frank plowed, I raised granary moned fence row, all went over to Milts.

thu 9 Frank spread manure, and went to Garrett, Nancy and I went up home and to Fathers home through Auburn.

fri 10 Frank plowed all day, I chored around pulled weeds in garden, rained.

sat 11 Frank plowed till noon went over to Milts, I went to Auburn mowed and raked yard picked pears plowed, rained this aft noon. Ez Rohms came this eve.

sun 12 Ma Frank and Dans came, Nathan Glazier here a while this eve.

mon 13 Frank plowed all day, I picked pears and went to Huntertown.

tue 14 Frank plowed, I went to Auburn to Fathers to Am Johnstons and Pas down past hom and to Auburn them home.

wed 15 Nancy Frank and I went up home to thrash, I brought load of wheat home, Essie came with Nancy and Frank.

thu 16 Frank went to Auburn and loafed, I plowed till supper after supper I worked in granary.

fri 17 Frank loafed, I went up to Elis to Franks home through Auburn.

sat 18 We all went to the picnic in Keens woods, we stayed all night up home, Frank came home. rain.

sun 19 Up home and to R C to church stopped down home a while, came on home.

mon 20 Frank plowed all day, I pulled weeds and fixed pig pen, went up to Fathers.

tue 21 Frank plowed, I helped Wes Miser thresh, I cut bands.

wed 22 Frank plowed, I helped Father thresh, I helped measure.

thu 23 I helped Father thresh till noon Frank came after me we came home, barney sick, I sick.

fri 24 Frank chored around till noon then he went to Auburn, I loafed sick.

sat 25 Frank chopped wood done chores, Nancy went to Norrises for medicine for barney, I loafed.

sun 26 Wm Burns and I went after Wm Norris, we went up to Pas, Avilla, Swan, and Laotta, Norris came to stay all night.

mon 27Frank boated, and hoed weeds, Nancy and I went to Auburn and up home, after dinner.

tue 28 Frank boated till noon then made cowshed, I asked thresher hands and went to hunter town.

wed 29 Frank helped Milt thresh, I got ready to thresh for me, we threshed this after noon.

thu 30 Frank helped Hilkys thresh till noon then loafed, I chored till noon then I went to Jennies.

fri 31 Frank helped Meyers thresh till noon then he loafed, I went up to Ben Klines.

sat 1 Frank trimmed elm trees, Nancy and I went up to Kageys and to Auburn with load of wheat.

sun 2 At home all day, Eli and Edy came.

mon 3 Frank left this morning, (got Pas barney I went up to Fathers, Corunna to pay for my wagon and to Kageys.

tue 4 I went to hunter town took Nathans oats along and got apples for cider, rained this morning.

wed 5 Chored around till noon, picked apples for cider, rained this fore noon.

thu 6 Went to Auburn to make cider, and to Fathers after kettle, rained this morn.

fri 7 Boilt cider and apple butter Pa and Ma came to help

sat 8 Pa and Ma went home, I plowed all day.

sun 9 At home all day. stormed last night rain and hail,

mon 10 Went to Auburn to Fathers and to Norrises and to Kageys.

thu 11 I went to Sabe Browns, Lutzes, Owens farm, Steels sowed rye for him, home, Wisemans, Hays. Frankses, Will Browns, Wisemans then home.

fri 12 Will Brown helped me hall oats, Sam Lawhead came, Nancy went home with Sam.

sat 13 I went to Auburn.

sun 14 I went R, C, to Church then to Pas, Nancy came home with me.

fri 4 I husked corn till noon 14 shocks, I went over to Sam Steels after hay, Sam and Sarah came this eve.

sat 5 Sam and I unloaded hay, Sams went home this after noon, I went to Auburn, I took Hen Baker home from Auburn, to Concord, rained nearly all day.

sun 6 At home all day Nancy and Dora went up to Hugh Watts a while this after noon.

mon 7 I halled wood from Dan Bakers 2 cords, halled pumpkins 2 loads, I paid for wood.
