~ORPHANS' HOME - 1890~

This four-story brick structure was constructed in 1890 along White River west of Walnut Street, north of downtown Muncie. Before the orphanage was built, homeless children had been housed in the Delaware County Infirmary, located east of Muncie on the Selma Pike. (now Ind. 32)

~ELM STREET BRIDGE~
ORPHANS' HOME IN BACKGROUND

The bridge was built in 1889 by the McCullough Co. The workers pictured worked for the Muncie Electric Co. In the background is the Delaware County Children's Home which would soon be relocated to Kilgore Avenue and the building demolished to make room for the orchard of the new Frank Ball home.
