The Last of the Blue

George W. Gibson Claims County Record for the size of Family - Boasts Plenty of Homes.

Twice Shot By Rebels

If you ever have occasion to look up George W. Gibson, you'd better start early.  He has six children, 36 grandchildren, and 41 great-grandchildren, and he lives with just about all of them - one at a time.

After a search that carried the party all over Delaware County, the 87-year-old veteran was found at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hutchison, one-half mile west of Macedonia.

"Yes, I guess I have the belt on that," smiled George.  "None of them can beat me on great-grandchildren." And he began naming off the 83 direct descendants of the house of Gibson.

On Crutches Many Years.

Twice wounded, old George has carried the mark of Confederate bullets for more than 70 years.  At intervals, he can get along tolerably well with a cane, but he has spent a quarter of a century on crutches.

"Oh, of course it's bothered me some", he admitted, placing a hand on his stiffened left ankle.  "I have not been able to do much work.  Had to give up faming, but for a while I operated a store in Anthony."

As was the case with most surviving veterans of the Civil War, he had to lie about his age to get in.  He was only 16 when he enlisted at Muncie in Company I, 57th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.  That was in September of 1863.

"My parents didn't know about it until I had enlisted and gone," said the wounded veteran, a little wistfully.  "But I wasn't gone long."

At the battle of Kenesaw Mountain young Gibson was wounded in the right arm by a musket ball.  That was June 27, 1864.  We was laid up for a while and didn't get back to his regiment until the following October.

Wounded at Nashville

He was just in time for the retreat from Decatur, Tenn., back to his next wounding place, Nashville.  In the battle of Franklin and in the skirmishes at Columbia and SPring Hill, George escaped unhurt.  But in the second day's fighting at Nashville, December 16, 1864, a musket ball in the left ankle left him crippled for life.

"I lay in the hospital at Nashville until the last of December and finally got out and back to the old home in Delaware County," said the veteran, his cane lying across his lap.  "And although I couldn't do any work on the farm, don't think it didn't fell good to be able to hobble out and look at the pigs and things."

That was what George Gibson got out of the war.

He had been in the Army of the Tennessee, 4th army corps, 2nd division, 2nd brigade.  He had been in the battles of Resaca, Georgia, Kenesaw Mountain, Franklin, Nashville and he came home on crutches.  June 17, 1865, he was mustered out at Indianapolis.

"I lost a buddy just a few weeks ago," said old George.  "James Jones, who died at ALbany this year, was in my regiment.  We served under Colonel Blanch, from Kokomo, when our first colonel was killed in action.  Our captain was J. J. Summers."

The old veteran hobbled to the door.  It was a familiar door to him George Gibson was born in Delaware County and has lived in Monroe Township most of his life.

"Anyway, there's one thing I can beat 'em all on," he said, thumping his cane in pride.  "Thirty-six living grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren-I've got the belt on that."
