Friday April 1, 1881
DIED: On the Tuesday evening, March 29th, 1881 of spinal meningitis, Mr. William J. Miley, aged about 38 years. Mr. Miley was stricken down while in robust health, by the dread disease that is now devastating so many homes in our midst. He was a farmer, living a mile west of Jasper, and on Friday worked all day breaking ground for oats and that night was taken sick with what his physician thought a bilious attack, but which proved to be the dreaded spinal fever. He suffered excruciatingly on Monday and was relieved from his suffering on Tuesday, by death. He was an estimable citizen, honest in everything and industrious. He moved to this county from Pike, where he was raised, 3 years ago and by his uprightness and industry had made many friends. He leaves a stricken widow and several children to mourn their loss but they realize that is his eternal gain. He was taken to Pike County for burial on Wednesday.
