Obituaries

Elsie Mae Lewis, 83 of Jasper died on Monday (February 23, 2004) after a courageous
34 - year battle with cancer. She was born in the Hickory Grove area of rural Dubois County on May 4, 1920, to
William and Dorothea Eichmiller Angerer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Luther L. Lewis of Cherry Tree,
Pennsylvania, who died on August 14, 1978. They had been married in 1940 in the Main
Post Chapel at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Survivors include one son, Allen L. Lewis and wife Colleen Goeppner Lewis of Fairfax,Virginia; One daughter, Dorothea Lewis Alig and husband Matthew Alig of Terre Haute, Indiana; two grandsons Allen L. Lewis II and wife Jean of Manassas,
Virginia, and Michael B. Lewis and wife Valla of Lawrenceville, Georgia; two great
granddaughters Hannah and Julia Lewis, and one great grandson Joseph Lewis; and an
extended family including several nephews and nieces, a brother-in-law, step sister-in-law
and many friends. Her parents, an infant sister, and a brother, Raymond Angerer, who was killed in France in World Warr II, two sisters, Josephine Angerer of Jasper and Alice Neukam of Dubois, and a niece Patricia Goldman, preceded her in death. She was a military wife and a community volunteer. She was active in her children’s school, church and family activities and was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a life long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dubois Crossroads; Charter member of D.A.V. Chapter # 77 Auxiliary; Gold Star Wives of America; member of V.F.W. Auxiliary to Post # 673, Jasper; and WELCA of St. John’s Church. Visitation is at the Becher - Kluesner Downtown Chapel from 2 - 8 p.m. Saturday
(Februarly 28, 2004) and one hour before services at the church on Sunday.
Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday (February 28, 2004 by the D.A.V.
Chapter # 77 and at 3:30 p.m. by the V.F.W. Auxiliary at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held on Sunday (February 29, 2004) at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Dubois Crossroads. Burial will be followed in the church cemetery. The Rev. Darrel Land ,and Edith Johnson will officiate. A Celebration of life meal will be held a the church following the service for her family and friends.
