FOUNTAIN COUNTY INDIANA KILLED IN ACTION OR DIED OF DISEASE, etc.

Source: History of Fountain County, Indiana.  Fountain County Genealogy Society.  Salem ,MA: Higginson Book Company 2013 – note the list from this source was found on page 385+ however I have added quite a bit of info on the ones I could find which was many of them😊
You can see down through the lists that there were men in the following regiments plus a few I have since found.  8th Inf – Co G.  9th Co B.  Co G – 10th.  Co G, H, I – 11th Cavalry.  Co A – 15th.  Co D (which turned into K) of the 20th; 28th Colored Troop – we sent some to fill in their numbers.  31st (listed in the Fountain history but I haven’t found any from there – probably so, though as well as 43rd, 51st, 53rd, 71st, along with some Ill Regiments, the 2nd NY Calvary and 4th US Calvary) Co E & I in the 40th; Co B, C, E & H in the 63rd; Co H in the 72nd; C in 86th; K in the 97th; C&D in the 116th ; Co E in 13th which was 100 day enlistment; Co k 147th; D&K in the 150th and A,C, G & H in the 154th Infantry – quite a big array.

ADKINS, James W. – KIA 27 May 1864  - Died from wounds received at the Battle of Resaca.  Enrolled with his brother in Co H 63rd on 11 Aug 1862 at Covington.
ALEXANDER, Galen – Died 13 Jan 1862 at Louisville Kentucky buried Cave Hill National Cemetery there and was about 32 years old.  He fought in Co., E, 40th Indiana

BOOE, Greenup - - Died 2 Dec 1863 of small pox at Indianapolis.  Enlisted 9 Aug 1862 at Covington Co C 63rd and died the first day of January 1863 although another source had 2 Dec 1863 (this from the Civil War Soldier Database)

BOORD, William J. – Enrolled at Attica 13 Aug 1862 Co C 86th and KIA at Stone River 31 Dec 1862.
BROWN, Jeremiah M. – Died June 16, (17th) 1864 Davis Crossroads, Cobb Co, Georgia.  From Covington.  Mustered in to Co H 63rd Infantry Aug 20, 1862.  The 63rd lost 5 men KIA and 11 wounded.

COLEMAN, William – Mustered in at age 27 1 Feb 1862 at Covington Co C 63rd – died of wounds he received at Resaca, Georgia  14 May 1864.
CONOVER, William M. - KIA – imagine this is the one buried in Coopers Chapel Cemetery at Veedersburg – born 25 July 1843 – died 28 July 1864 – in a biography of Billy Ephlin, he notes that the β€œFamous 63rd was part of the Third Brigade of the Third Division of the 23rd Army Corps and β€œCapt . William Conover, Covington was the first commanding officer of Co. H.  He was succeeded by Capt. Schuyler LaTourette…”

COUCH, Charles – Died of Wounds in May 1864
COX, William – Pvt Co E 40th Indiana Infantry – joined Dec 10, 1861 at Hillsboro and mustered in the same day.  He was 5’10” tall, blue eyed, light haired and had a sandy complexion.  Wounded in the right thigh and suffered a fractured leg in the Battle of Missionary Ridge Nov 25, 1863.  Absent from duty Jan 1864 and discharged Jan 31, 1864.  Immediately he reenlisted as a veteran in the same company and regiment Feb 1, 1864.  On June 16, 1864 William was shot in the knee while building breastworks near Lost Mountain during the Atlanta Campaign.  Doctors amputated his leg but he died from all of this June 26, 1864 at the hospital at Chattanooga – buried Chattanooga National Cemetery.  His wife, Agnes gave birth to their son, William Milton Cox and received his widow’s pension.  Tombstone says June 25 service records (according to FindAGrave) state June 26.  His brother, John 1845-1862 died 7 March 1862 at Pea Ridge in Benton County Arkansas brought back to Danville Vermilion County, Illinois National cemetery where the family was living at the time of his enlistment in Danville in Co F 35th Regiment. NOTE: with such a common name, could have this wrong, but believe it is the correct fellow – not even sure he lived in Fountain but was a good group and he joined up from neighboring Danville as did his brother.  
CRANE, Jonathan M. – Enrolled at age 18 on the 4th of March 1862 at Covington in Company H 60th Indiana (not one of our usual regiments) – he died at Milliken’s Bend, Louisiana March 12, 1863.  
CRANE, William S. Jr. – Died of Wounds  born: 23 Dec 1839 died 14 May 1864
CULBERTSON, Andrew J. – KIA 8 May 1864 buried Knoxville National Cemetery, Tennessee – Co E 63rd Indiana – enlisted 30 Aug 1862 and mustered in same day.
CULBERTSON, Jessie D. β€œJD” – died 29 May 1864 in Knoxville buried Knoxville National Cemetery, Tennessee – he was also in Co E, 63rd Indiana Infantry – he was married to Sarah Sherry according to findagrave and their children were Francis Asbery; Sarah C; Jane and John Milton Wesley Culbertson.  At least I assume this is him although he seems to have no connection to FoCo.

DAVIS, John M. –Joined Co G 40th Regiment from Hillsboro at age 21 on 15 Oct 1861.  He died at Pelham, Tennessee July 22, 1863.  KIA
DEER, Byron – KIA 22 Jan 1864  (or died from wounds) son of Urial and was from Harveysburg area.
DRAKE, George W. died 2 Jan 1864 Nicholasville, Jessamine KY.  (Working Collins Family Tree on Ancestry so take this as a starter point)
DUBOIS, John T. b 24 April 1845 – died of wounds on 20 April 1862, son of William VanDorn Dubois and Sarah (Allen).
DUNN, John – POW (Killed) the only John Dunn I can find lived with James and Margaret Marquis and a very large family and others in Shawnee Township 1860.  He is 19 and born in Iowa – no occupation.

EARP, William
ELLENBARGER, John E. – at Covington on the 1st of July in 1863, John Ellenbarger joined the service – Co C 116th.  On his Civil War Soldier notes it says he went AWOL but does not give a date – anyone know more about this fellow?
ELMORE, William Monroe – While living at Harveysburg, Fountain County, Indiana, he enlisted in the ARMY (Co A 31st Indiana Infantry) while a husband (of Catherine Lindley) and a father of four.  His enlistment noted he was a veteran but this would be awfully early to reenlist.  On 24 June 1864 (abdominal wound) at Kennesaw Mount, Cobb County, Georgia.  He was first buried there but his body was removed to the Marietta National Cemetery in Cobb County, Georgia.  (source: findagrave)

FOSTER, David – KIA 30 Nov 1864 – David was born in Tennessee and after the battle of Franklin, Tennessee was missing,
assumed dead.  He had enlisted in Co I, 40th Regiment on 5 Dec 1861. He was in the 1860 census (Covington) assumedly with his parents, Robert and Sarah and two brothers, James and Joshua.
FOWLER, Rowland – Died 7 June 1862 buried Corinth National Cemetery, Mississippi.  Pvt Co G 10th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.  He enlisted 18 Sept 1861 and mustered in the same day.  He resided in Fountain County when he enlisted, the son of Moses & Sarah (Gotchell) Fowler and had brothers Henry and Robert and sister America.

GISH, Oscar (Capt) - Died of Wounds  1844-1864 – Believe this is Oscar H. Gish Co E, 63rd Regiment promoted to Corpl then 1st Lt (Sept 1, 1864) and to Captain 20 days before his discharge 21 June 1865.  He died at Covington July 10, 1867 age 25 years old.
GRADY, Garret  d. 1865 – this is likely Garret Grady age 25 Van Buren Twp, Fountain County 1860 with his parents, Reuben and Margaret.  He is listed as a farmer and there are several brothers and sisters with this family.   
GRAHAM, Arthur – Died of Wounds – may be Arthur Graham in Covington age 25 in 1860 born in Ireland with his father, Henry and others in the family in Covington 1860.
GRAHAM, Milford – KIA – memorial at Crown Hill National Cemetery, Indianapolis – both on same stone – Milford died May 16, 1865 - Oliver June 27, 1865 (hard to read but think that’s correct)

GRAY, Andrew J. KIA – died 14 May 1864 (Resaca)– he was found as age 16 with David and Catharine and six brothers and sisters in Mill Creek Township (Harveysburg) and attended school that year.  .

GREEN, Marion KIA  d. 14 May 1864 buried Chattanooga National Cemetery, Hamilton County, Tennessee – remains removed from Resaca where he was killed.  Pvt Co H, 63rd Indiana Infantry
GREENWOOD, Frank A. – DOW 16 Oct 1864.  Born 1831 in Trumball County, Ohio died Chattanooga, Hamilton County Tennessee.  Buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery there.  An unusual company to be with from here but his tombstone says Cpl 18th Ind. Btry  

HAWKINS, Tilghman H(oward) born about 1838 died in Indianapolis 30 Sept 1862 of Disease.  Mustered in 24 Jan 1862 at Covington Co C 63rd Indiana.
HENDRIX, Alva – Died of Disease – 1863  - first thought was this was Watson’s brother, Isaac Alvey born 1843 but he passed 15 Feb 1868 and not sure if it was from CW at all.  If not him, wonder who? Alvey is buried in Hendrix Cemetery as is Watson.

HIBBS, Joseph J. – Co E 63rd Indiana Infantry died 2 June 1864 Knoxville National Cemetery, Knox County, Tennessee.

HUTSON, William – Died of Wounds 31 May 1864 from wounds he received at Resaca, one of the worst battles of the Civil War.  He mustered in to Co C 63rd Indiana on Aug 11, 1862.

JONES, Jacob – KIA d. 9 May 1864

KIFF, Ambrose – do not believe this soldier died in the war.  He is buried in Luther, Oklahoma Cemetery 1839-1912.  His stone is a government stone and says Ambrose C. Kiff, Co H 150th Ind Inf.  The 150th was one of the ones Fountain had soldiers in but mainly I & K.  .  He married #1 Elizabeth Hatton in 1858 (17 March) in Fountain County.  His head stone was ordered March 10, 1932 and received May 6th.  Co H 150th Regt Ind Inf – Pvt.  He applied for a pension Co H 150th Ind Inf on 26 June 1889 while living in Kansas.   
KIGER, Elias D. – died 10 April 1865 buried Antietam (Maryland) National Cemetery. Indiana 150th – Company H.  His wife Ann (Neal) whom he had married 9 August 1862 began receiving a pension on June 16th of that year.  They had one daughter, Lydia.  
KNIPE, John W. – John enlisted at age 22 at Covington in Company H of the 63rd and died at Alexandria Virginia of disease on 16 Feb 1865 – name also found as Nipe.

LaBAW, David – Born: 8 March 1835 to Benjamin Butler and Delila Jane Marquess and died in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County Tennessee 4 April 1863 He enlisted 13 Aug 1862 Co. C, 86th Indiana and advanced to the rank of Corporal before he died
LAHAM, Denrick – found nothing with all kinds of tricks ☹  Anyone know him?
LANDERS, Nathaniel – At Attica on 13 Aug 1862 he enlisted in Co C 86th Indiana. He died Jan 18, 1863 at Nashville, Tenn.  Parents were Robert and Hannah and he had several siblings.  
LEMON, John B. β€œEnrolled” 11 August 1862 and died and buried at Camp Nelson, Kentucky March 9, 1864, a member of Company H, 63rd Indiana. Son of Alexander and Sarah and had several brothers and sisters.  
LOPP, Milton P. – died 18 April 1862 and is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery in Davidson County, Tennessee.

MARKINS, Charles KIA 30 Nov 1864 at Franklin Tennessee, member of Co D of the 63rd, having enrolled 13 Oct 1863 at Covington.
MARTIN, William H. H.   KIA last day of 1862 at Stone River, Tennessee.  He had enrolled into the conflict earlier that year, 13 August at Attica and was just 20.  Member of Co C 86th Indiana.
McBRIDE, Morgan E. – At age 20, Morgan enrolled in Company H of the 63rd at Covington on 11 Aug 1862 and died from disease at Marietta, GA on 30 Sept 1864.
McCOY, Isaac – he was found in Fulton Twp (age 8) 1850 census with John and Elizabeth McCoy – sisters: Martha, Anna, and Rachel and brothers, Willis and John T.  He was eight years old.  Many Friends chose not to go to war but Isaac either opted to or was forced to but he was the bugler thus did not have to shoot at anyone.  He enlisted 25 Feb 1862 and survived the Battle of Shiloh but died of typhoid fever later and is buried at Shiloh National Cemetery in Hardin County, Tennessee.  A brief obit was in the Rockville Republican June 4, 1862 – died at Pittsburg Landing on May 22, Isaac McCoy member of the 9th Indiana Battery, Capt. Thompson.  Another brave has gone to rest, Another home made desolate!”  (findagrave) – Heart breaking!

MYERS, Daniel T. Died Nashville, Tenn 9 Jan 1865 – 52st Indiana Infantry Company H.  Buried Bonebrake Cemetery in Veedersburg (born 5 July 1844 and died 7 Jan 1865 according to FindAGrave entry but stone is hard to read so not sure).

NEVILL, Michael – Enrolled at age 18 on 24 Jan 1862 in Covington in Company B 63rd Indiana.  Missing in a skirmish at Buzzards Roost, Georgia on 9 May 1864 – presumed dead.

OSBORN, Calvin C. - d. 8 Dec 1862 – buried Crown Hill National Cemetery in Indianapolis.  

PATTERSON, James E.  Maj. KIA 14 May 1864 b. 31 Aug 1836 he has a memorial in Oak Grove at Covington.
PENNER, James – KIA on June 16, 1864.  63rd Regiment, Co H enrolled 11 Aug 1862 at Covington. He was 10 years old in Wabash Township, 1850  census with assume his parents, John and Mary A. with eight brothers and sisters.  
POWELL, John – Died of Wounds on December 7 in 1863 as a member of Com I, 40th Regiment, having enrolled 1 Nov 1861 at Covington.
PREVO, John T. – Died of Wounds  - found nothing on this man – anyone know anything about him? -

SAMPLE, George born 1833 Fountain County, Indiana died 8 May 1864 Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee buried Chattanooga National Cemetery, Hamilton County, Tennessee.  63rd Indiana mustered in Aug 20, 1862 and died in Tennessee of typhoid fever. (son of William Hugh Sample and Elender Abernathy Sample, married in 1858 to Malinda Sowers. They had at least two daughters, Mary Ellen and Amanda Jane.

SHIPMAN, William – may be William Marshall Shipman born 1846 in Montgomery County to __ and Mary Ann (Wine) Shipman.  This one anyway was in Co H 116th Ind Inf died 10 March 1866 and is buried in Smith Cemetery in Boswell.
SMITH, Walter H. – enrolled 9 Aug 1862 Covington into Co E 63rd and died β€œat Covington” with no date in the Civil War Soldier Database for Indiana.  This is likely the one buried in Hopkins Cemetery, Stone Bluff died 31 Jan 1863 born 29 May 1838 son of C&E and in the 63rd Indiana.  
SNODDY, George W. – enlisted 9 Aug 1861 at Covington, Indiana Sgt.  Mustered out when he died of disease 11 Jan 1863 Camp Bayard, Virginia (also has him mustering in the same day in NY – that’d be rather hard to do but it is a report from the NY Adjutant General.  Odd

TADLOCK, John S. enlisted 21 Oct 1862 at age 22 at Indianapolis into Co B 63rd – the Indiana Civil War Soldier Database notes that β€œrecruit was discharged – physical disabilities”  so him being on tis list may not be proper. He was born in Tennessee son of Lewis and Deborah and had several brothers and sisters.  He is buried at Wallace in the Jackville Cemetery and his death is 5 Nov 1863 although his listing in the Fountain History notes a death date of 1 August 1863.  Stone does not have the date – government stone with JS Tadlock Co B 63d Ind Inf. Only

TRINKLE, Jacob A. died 3 March 1864 – has a memorial at Keeling Cemetery, Veedersburg (born 1836 son of Frederick and Sarah (Martin) Trinkle.  Enlisted 20 Aug 1862 at Covington Co H 63rd Indiana. Died March 3, 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky  - he is listed as buried at Camp Nelson – and died of typhoid fever March 3, 1864.  (Born in Kentucky) Private 63rd Ind Co H.
TRINKLE, Martin (Robert Martin) - a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Butt) Trinkle he was born in Fountain Co 6 May 1836 and died 22 May 1864 in Bradley, Tennessee .  He has a nice stone at the Trinkle-Butt Knob Hill Cemetery at Veedersburg.  Co H 63rd Infantry.  
TRULLINGER, Francis M. – KIA – While living at Covington, he signed up on Dec 21, 1861 in Co I 40th Indiana.  He was killed at Pine Mountain Georgia June 14, 1864 where he was originally buried and now resides at the Marietta National Cemetery in Cobb County, Georgia (he was a Sgt).

VanHOOK, John (Jonathan) Francis – born 1827 in Fountain County – died 11 March 1865 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee and buried there in the Nashville National Cemetery.  He too was in Co H 63rd Indiana.  He died in Cumberland General Hospital from inflamed lungs.  
VanLEER (VanLier) Jeremiah – died of wounds – believe this is the Jeremiah Vanlere age 16 in the 1860 census born in Ohio (VanBuren Township 1860).  It may also be the Jeremiah Vanleer who died 7 July 1864 and is buried in Oak Grove, Covington.  Although the memorial on FindAGrave has born 11 Nov 1855 you can’t really see the stone and it has a flag on the stone so think this is him and he’s 18 years vs. 8 years old.  Love to know yes or no but it doesn’t make sense for an 8-year-old to have a flag on his stone.  -

WAGNER, Michael A. – Died Non-Battle – probably Michael age 22 in 1860 with John and Elizabeth Wagoner several sisters and one brother in Shawnee Twp.  He enrolled 11 Aug 1862 with the infamous Co H of the 63rd on 11 Aug 1862 and died of wounds (received by a railroad accident at Shepherdsville, Kentucky on Aug 23, 1863.

WARD, Archibald T. – Sgt Co E, 63rd Indiana – born Jan 29, 1829 died 8 May 1865 buried Chattanooga National Cemetery, Hamilton County, Tennessee

WATSON, Squire = b. 1842 son of Squire and Mary Jane (Blythe) died 10 June 1864 in Atlanta, Georgia. He enrolled at Covington 20 Feb 1862 at age 18 in Covington in Co C 63rd and died of disease.  
WELLS, Andrew J. – died of wounds
WILSON, John – Enrolled at Covington 8 Feb 1862 in Co C 63rd Indiana at age 27.  He died Dec 17, 1864 of wounds that he had received at Nashville the same day.  
WIRTH, William C.  died– Co B 63rd entered 19 Feb 1862 and died of disease Feb 13, 1865.

YATES, Henry died 6 April 1862 – anyone know anything about him?
