WWII-KIA-HANIFORD, Vernon Edward

A memorial service for Pvt. Fist Class Vernon Edward Haniford, who was Killed In Action somewhere in France on October 16, 1944, was held at the Hillsboro Methodist Church Sunday afternoon.  He was born at
Newtown, eldest son of Joseph and Sylvia Haniford on Feb 17, 1922.  He was baptized in the Hillsboro Methodist Church on April 5, 1942 and was a graduate of Hillsboro HS.  He was also a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge.

He entered the Armed Forces of the United States December 12, 1942 and left the states in August 1944 for foreign duty.

Memorial Post No 188 American Legion of Hillsboro assisted in the service with special music by Daisy McBroom and Vera Shade.  Piano prelude and postlude were by Mildred Gray.  Words of comfort were given
by Daisy McBroom followed by a talk by Charles C. Cooper, member of Memorial Post.  Rev. RS Gwin, pastor, gave a message on, "At Home with God." Taps by John McDonald   --- transcribed by kbz

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haniford, living on their farm northwest of Hillsboro, received word by telegram from the War Department Monday evening informing them that their son, Pfc. Vernon E. Haniford, 22, was Killed
In Action in France on October 16. Pfc. Haniford, who entered military service in December, 1942, was shipped to England several months ago. He went from there into France about September 1. He was serving with the infantry.

Before going overseas, Pfc. Haniford had training at Camp Phillips in Kansas and Camp McCain in Mississippi

Born Feb 17, 1922, at Newtown, Pfc. Haniford was the son of Joe Haniford and Sylvia Babb Haniford. He was graduated in 1940 from the Hillsboro HS.  Following his graduation, he worked on his father's farm until he entered service.

A brother, Sgt. Joe Haniford, Jr. also in the service, is now somewhere in England.  In addition to the parents and the brother, Pfc. Haniford is survive by a grandfather, Ed Haniford of Newtown

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Haniford, living northwest of Hillsboro, were last week notified by the War Department that their son, Pfc. Vernon E. Haniford, aged 22, was KIA in France Oct 14.

Pfc. Haniford, who entered the service in December, 1942, was several months ago sent to England and was about Sept 1 transferred to France where he was serving in the infantry.  He was born Feb 17, 1922 at
Newtown, son of Joe and Sylvia Babb Haniford. He graduated in 1940 from Hillsboro HS after which he worked on his father's farm until induction in to the army.  A brother, Sgt. Joe Haniford, Jr is now in England. Ed Haniford of Newtown is grandfather of the young man. -kbz
