William M. Jackson, a former resident, died in Hillsboro, Oregon, Sept 27.  Below we copy from the local paper an account of his life.  In addition to the facts noted, Mr. Jackson was in the grocery business here for a number of years after the Civil War in the room now occupied by Cuppy Store. He married a daughter of Benjamin Smith, who at that time was living in the old tavern on the Will Milligan place which recently burned.  Mr. Jackson was here for a visit a few months ago.

One of Washington County's faithful officers, County Treasurer, W.M. Jackson, suffered a stroke of paralysis yesterday morning about 9:30 in front of the Delta Drug Store.  He was noticed to be suffering from an apparent vertigo, and suddenly attempted to seat himself on the doorstep.  A minute later he fell and was unconscious.  He was quickly carried to the waiting room of Dr. Linklater, where his collar and tie were at once removed.  Dr. Linklater applied restoratives, but to no avail.  Dr. F.A. Bailey was called in consultation and his relatives were notified.  It was apparent that besides a heavy attack of heart failure, the stricken man was suffering from a brain hemorrhage.  He was removed to his home on Second street and rested some easier, altho there was no apparent improvement in his condition.  Death occurred at 8:30 this morning.

County Treasurer Jackson performed the duties of county treas. for several terms and was one of the most efficient men ever elected to the office.  He has succeeded himself 3 times and his books were always kept in fine shape.  He was engaged in the real estate business at Hozie until 1893 when he came to Oregon and settled near Dilley, then with  the Geo. Dilworth & Co. of Portland.

He is survived by his widow and a daughter, Mrs. R.C. Vaught, of Hillsboro, and a son, Walter M. Jackson of Portland.  Otis M., the eldest son is dead.

Mr. Jackson resided 15 years in Kansas and then came to Oregon settling near Dilley, on a small fruit farm in 1893.  He was elected county treasurer in 1902, and has filled the position ever since, being reelected by large majorities.

He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and also a Son of a Veteran, was a Mason and a member of the M.E. Church, having held the office of Superintendent of Sunday School for a number of years.

The surviving widow and children have the sympathy of their hundreds of friends in Washington County.  The funeral will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon at the ME Church, under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity, interment being in the Hillsboro Cemetery. - typed by kbz
