Karl E. Jahnke, 79, formerly of Hillsboro and had been residing at the Covington Manor Nursing Center, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday April 16 1996 at the nursing center. Born April 23 1916, in Hillsboro, he was the son of Emil and Ethel Combs Jahnke. He had owned and operated the Hillsboro Lumber Yard. Mr. Jahnke was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army and was discharged as a Captain in 1953. He was a member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. He was a certified firefighter and served as the Hillsboro Fire Chief from 1952 to 1962; Boy Scout Master for four years; member and past commander of the American Legion Post 188; helped form in the Tri County Firefighters in 1965; Deputy Marshall 20 years and Marshall eight years of Hillsboro. He was married to Mildred Cotten on June 12 1942 in Danville, Ill. She survives and lives at Covington Manor. Also surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Karen Louise Astell of West Lebanon; four sisters, Mrs. Louise Donn of Red Bud, Ill., Mrs. Dorothy Neal and Mrs. Ruby Hershberger, both of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Ruth Neal of Attica; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Keith Allen Jahnke and a brother, Ernest Jahnke. Visitation was Wednesday at Maus Funera Home, Hillsboro. Services were Thursday with Pastor Richard Russell officiating. Interment with military graveside services in Rose Hill Cemetery.
