JOHNSON, Charles Herbert

Funeral services for Charles Herbert Johnson, age 83, a native of Highland Twp., Vermillion County, IN., were held Friday, Sept 18 at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home here. Mr. Johnson was born Jan 21, 1881, at Hopewell in Highland Twp., the son of Louis H. and Sarah Shute Johnson. He died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sept 16 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient two days. He was married Dec 20, 1914 to Virginia Hall, who preceded him in Death Feb 9, 1942. He was a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge of Gessie and he had been a farmer for several years. He was an engineer for the railroad and had helped on the construction of the Panama Canal in 1903. He also had worked on the Denver and Rio Grande railroads in Colorado. He had resided in Mattowan, Mich., for 20 years and he had been a resident of 6 Iowa St in Danville, Ill., for 3 years. Survivors include; one brother Ray of Danville, Ill., and one niece, Kathryn Colwell. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, one daughter and five brothers and sisters. The Rev. Dewey Findley of Perrysville officiated and burial was in Hopewell Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dewey Prather, Forrest Cossey, Ray Geiger, Clarence Wait, Herman Holder and Fletcher Sparks.
