FERNE JONES OF KINGMAN VICTIM IN WRECK ON 32

Three en route to hospital here where husbands are patients One of three women en route to Culver Hospital Monday morning to visit their husbands was killed in a traffic crash 10 miles west of the city on Ind.32. Her two companions were injured. Killed in the one-car crash was Mrs. Ferne Jones, 61, Kingman, who had planned to take her husband, Loren Jones, to their home from the hospital. Those injured in the crash were Mrs. Josephine Newnum, 28, of Logansport, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Nellie Kilian, 61, of Broadlands, Ill. The accident occurred when Mrs. Nuwnum’s station wagon, going east, skidded on a curve on the wet pavement: jumped a small ditch on the north side of the road, and stopped against a wire fence. It did not overturn. A heavy snow had been falling in the area and there was slush on the road. Both Mrs. Jones, who was riding in the center, and Mrs. Kilian were thrown out on the ground. Mrs. Jones was pinned under the station wagon and her body could not be extricated until a wrecker arrived. Mrs Newnum and her husband, Robert, 28, a teacher at Logansport, had gone to Kingman Sunday due to the fact that her father was in the hospital here. Mr. Newnum was taken ill and also was brought to the hospital here. The Newnums live at 2825 George St, in Logansport. In the meantime, it was determined that Mr. Jones, who had undergone eye surgery, would be able to go home Monday morning. Mrs. Jones and her daughter left Kingman about 8:30 a.m. They were accompanied by Mrs. Kilian, whose husband, Henry D Kilian, is a medical patient at Culver Hospital. They had a mattress in the back of the station wagon so that Mr. Jones could be taken home comfortably. Mrs. Newnum and Mrs. Kilian, were brought to Culver Hospital, where Mrs. Newnum was released after being treated for shock. Mrs. Kilian’s condition was described as fair Monday night. She suffered back injuries. Mr. Jones was released from the hospital Monday. Mr. Newnam’s condition was reported good Monday night. The accident was investigated by Sheriff Merle Remley, Deputy Clarence Demoret and the county coroner, Dr Fred M Blix. Mrs. Jones was the third person killed west of here on Ind 32 in the past eight days. Mrs. Jones was born March 6, 1898 near Covington, and was the daughter of Manford A and Myrta Noel Richardson. She was married in 1921. A member of the Kingman E.U. B. church, she was also a member of the various women’s organizations at the church. She lived in Fountain County all her life. She attended Perrysville High School, Indiana Normal at Danville and Madame Blaker’s School at Indianapolis. Mrs. Jones had taught school at Snoddy, Cates, Mellott, Rabb and Kingman. Surviving are her husband; her daughter; a son, Dean of Kingman; four grandchildren, two brothers, Kenneth Richardson of Muncie and Lynn Richardson of Waynetown; three sisters, Mrs. B F Harmon of Villa Grove, Ill, Mrs. Frank Holand of Kingman and Mrs. Frank Shaughnessy of West Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Kingman E.U.B. Church with Rev. Paul Dubois of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call at the family home after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Servies Funeral Home of Waynetown is in charge of the services.
