JONES, Grover - 1914

Source: Kingman Star Friday, September 11, 1914

Rockville has been the scene of much excitement the past week.  Six stores were entered by night prowlers Tuesday night, but not much booty was secured by the, their biggest haul being at Dick Ott’s drug store where nineteen quart bottles of whiskey were looted.  An investigation followed and resulted in the landing of Theo Richardson and another pal in the county bastile.  It was thought, however, that GROVER JONES  was implicated in the mischief and a continuous search was kept up for him.  Wednesday night he was located near the Vandalia depot.  Sheriff Nicholas and Marshal Boardman started in search of their victim and encountered him near the Vandalia tracks.  The sheriff order Jones to throw up his hands but instead he drew a revolver and fired on the officer, who returned the fire.  At this, Marshal Boardman caught Jones’ arms and tried to disarm him but in the melee Jones broke loose and ran down the track, where he was later found dead. -s
