Roy Purnell Jones, age 46, resident of Covington, Route 2, and the owner and operator of the Covington Food Lockers, west side of the square, died unexpectedly at 5:45 AM Monday March 24 of a heart attack. The Jones family resides on the top of Hunter's Hill, just west of Covington on US 136. Mr. Jones had started to Covington in his truck when he was stricken fatally. His truck ran off the highway on the south side of the bottom of Hunter's Hill and through a fence on the Starkey property. Frank Lefwitch, 103 West 13th Street, Danville, Illinois, who was en route to work in Indiana, followed Mr. Jones down the hill and saw the truck leave the highway. He stopped to see what was wrong and then started on toward Covington to call for aid. Mrs. Jones who saw her husband drive out of their driveway, started out after him she looked out a window and failed to see his truck going down the highway. The Bodine and Shelby ambulance and State Troopers Earl Haggart of Covington and Stan Kenny of Veedersburg, en route to a wreck further west, came along shortly after Mr. Jones' attack. Mr. Jones had been ill with a heart ailment since 1952. He lived in the State Line community until 1942 when he moved to Hunter's Hill. He drove a school bus to the Covington Community Schools for several years and he farmed until 1955. In 1954 he and his wife purchased the Covington Food Lockers from Ralph WIdney. He was born May 6, 1911 in Attica, the son of Connie and Sena Bailey Jones. he was married October 19, 1929 to Opal Dunivan who survives. Mr. Jones was a member of Fountain Lodge 60, F & AM, and the Covington Community Consolidated School Building Corporation. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: three sons, Jack of Covington, Elza of Covington Route 2, and Ace Leon (Cappy), at home; four grandchildren; four brothers, Robert of Waynetown, Eugene of West Point, and James and William, both of Lafayette; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Florey and Mrs. Opal McKinney, both of Veedersburg; and Mrs. Fannie Glascock of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elza. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home. The Rev. John Rierson, pastor of the Benson Chapel Church, officiated, and burial was in Mount. Hope Cemetery. Masonic Rites were conducted at the graveside.
