Gladys Opal Julian, 89, of Eugene, formerly of Danville, Ill. and Covington, died at 12:24 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2000, at her residence. She was born June 9, 1911 in Fairmount, Ill., the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Mapes) White. She married William Lesco Julian on October 1, 1928 in Danville, Ill. He passed away on March 11, 1940. Gladys enjoyed crossword puzzles, baking pies and listening to the radio. In 1976 she was named the Commercial News Outstanding Woman of the Year. She was very instrumental in the National Park Home Improvement for sewers and water and helping get the Lynch Volunteer Fire Department started. She was Chef Manager at Olin Mathison Corporation near Covington for many years. She had previously lived in Covington and Danville, Ill., before making her home in Eugene, Ind. Surviving are two sons, Don I. (Betty) Julian of Cayuga and Robert L. (Lola Dale) Julian, Bloomington; a daughter, Linda L. Marrow of Cayuga; a step-son, Gerald Julian of Lansing, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Connie Julian of Covington; seven grandchildren, Donna Faye (Lawrence) Streuer of Fairfield, Ohio, Karen Johnson of Newport, Don L. (Becky) Julian of Cayuga, Steven (cheryl) Julian of Jamestown, Terri (Randy) Springer of Winston-Salem, N.C., April Keele of Covington and Eric (Laura) Bell of Covington; 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one step son, one step daughter, one grandson, two brothers and one sister. The funeral was at DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home Monday, September 18, 2000, with Rev. Jon Overbey officiating. Burial was in Upper Mound Cemetery, Covington. – jlr
