ATTICA — Carmen Gertrude Lefton, 91, 1110 N. Perry St., Attica, died at 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 19, 1999, at her residence. Born April 12, 1908, in Hooker, Okla., she was the daughter of Thomas Chauncey and Martha Elizabeth Moudy Pattengale. She married Sherman L. Lefton on March 12, 1927, in Attica. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1987. She attended school in Attica, and was formerly employed as a coook in the cafeteria at Attica High School. She was later employed as a nurse's aide for Tall Trees Nursing Home in Covington, and later for the Alward and Woodland Manor Nursing Centers in Attica. She was a former member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Attica and had attended the Attica-Williamsport Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the V.F.W. Post 3318 of Attica, and the Attica War Mothers. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and crafts. Survivors include: sons, Paul “Pat” Lefton, Attica, Charles Lefton, Veedersburg, Thomas Lefton, San Diego; daughters, Martha (Gordon) Foster, Violet Simmons, Lenora “Flea” (Harold) Walker, all of Attica, Linda (Charles) Borgel, Louisville, Ky.; brothers, William Pattengale, Dwayne Pattengale, Richard Pattengale, all of Attica, Earl Pattengale, Chesterton; sisters, Josephine Mortimore, Mellott, Wastella (Harold) VanDame, Attica; 48 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son, Sherman “Bud” Lefton, Jr.; daughter, Betty Brenner; grandson, Carl Wayne Lefton; four sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were 2 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the Maus Funeral Home in Attica with Rev. Jeff Newton officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery. – jlr
