COVINGTON β€” George Arthur β€œArt” Stevens, 58, currently of Covington, died at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006 in Home Hospital, Lafayette. He was born May 22, 1948 in Beaverville, Ill., the son of George Perry and Regina Lee (Williams) Stevens. He spent most of his time in the Rankin and Hoopeston, Ill. area. He enjoyed nature, learning, and his family. He was a patient and kind man who loved to teach. He was previously enlisted in the U. S. Army. He attended a chess club in Danville, Ill. He worked as a mechanic for many years of his life. Though he had a trying life he always seemed to see the bright side of things and lighten the situation for everyone else's benefit. He would reach out a helping hand to anyone, no matter how many times they had proven unworthy, and he was a forgiving man. Survivors include: a son, Michael Stevens, Ft. Payne, Ala.; three daughters, Michelle Stevens, Rainsville, Ala., Melissa (Joey) Payne, Ft. Payne, Ala., and Jennifer Stevens, at home; a brother, Alan Stevens, Woodland, Ill.; four grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and a dear friend and companion, Kathy Treach. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Johnny. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, Danville National Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion and V.F.W.
