Catherine Dugan was born in Mason County, Kentucky March 24, 1827, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Sowers, 1309 W. Parke St, Urbana, Ill. Tuesday evening June 20, 1916. Early in her life she sought and found her Savior and united with the Methodist Church and continued in the faith until life's latest hour. She was married to Dr. Alexander Surbaugh, March 17, 1852. They lived for a number of years in the Howard community afterwards moving to Harveysburg where the Dr. died. Seven children were given to this union, and only two survive their mother Mrs. Albert Sowers and Mrs. Sam Durman of Urbana. Since the scattering of her children to homes of their own and by death she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Sowers where she has been tenderly and lovingly cared for the past 15 years. More than once in recent years her children and grandchildren have been summoned to her bedside because the seriousness of her condition that they might add their share to the ministration of her needs but the last call has come and she no longer needs their care. In the relation so full a life, Aunt Catherine as we loved to call her was an exemplary Christian. Intelligent and kind she won the respect and confidence for those who.... As the wife of the physician she learned something of the science of medicine and many were the times in the Dr's absence that she administered to the needs of her neighbors and friends. The weather was never too hot or cold, the nights too dark or stormy nor her physical frame too weary to administer help and comfort when needed. Her neighbors and friends have lost a companion but her memory will live through years to come and the two daughters, 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren will love to speak of the years when she lived and with her going another link that joins the old era of the community to the new has been broken and a record of 89 years 2 months and 21 days has been made with the closing of her life.   -- typed by kbz
