Joseph B. Thomas, son of George V. and Julia A. Summers Thomas was born in Jackson Twp, Fountain County IN on August 13, 1859 passed away on the same farm on which he was born, January 21, 1934 at the age of 74 years 7 months 8 days. He was the eldest and only surviving member of a family of 5, one brother John and three sisters, Mary, Amanda and Sarah. His grandfather from whom he was named came from Virginia to Ohio, then to Indiana in pioneer days, settling in Jackson Twp. On December 21, 1880, at the age of 21, he was united in marriage to Almire V. Myers and to this union was given two sons and one daughter, all surviving: Mrs. Cora Lowe of Attica, Ind; Earl Thomas of Gary, Ind and J.T. Thomas, Jr. of Jackson Twp. He spent his entire life in the community in which he was born, reared to manhood at a time when an education was hard to obtain he succeeded far beyond the average boy of his day, being a successful school teacher and community leader. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and rendered fine service throughout his life to the needy. To know him and deal with him was to love him, for his fairness, honesty and truthfulness, many sought his wife's advice knowing and believing in his integrity and honor. The citizens of his township made him trustee from 1926 to 1931 without opposition, a position he filled with credit and honor. While not a member of any church he was a believer and supporter of the Baptist church and always attended services. Since1917 he served as trustee and treasurer of the Wolf Creek Cemetery associaiton and most of the improvements are due to his efforts and influence. He will be greatly missed as friend, neighbor and co-worker for what stood for the best in the upbuilding of the community and high ideals of citizenship. A noble well spent life of almost 3/4 of a century is ended but his good deeds, kindly acts and the council will long be remembered. Left to mourn are the wife, two sons, one daughter 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild, little Nancy Joe Lowe of Hillsboro, other relatives and friends.
