THOMPSON, Charlie E.

Charlie E. Thompson, eldest child of Joseph R. and Dorinda Pickard Thompson, was born September 28, 1869 and lived to the age of 78 years, five months and 27 days. On Monday, March 15, exactly six months after the passing of Clay, his brother just younger than himself, came Charlie’s summons.
Although he was born in Sugar Creek Township, much of Charlie’s childhood and youth was in Penn Township. While his parents operated the farm known as the John W. Russell farm, Charlie graduated from the Stafford School, having finished the eighth grade under the teaching of William Hill.
His parents bought a farm and moved back to Sugar Creek Township, but at the age of 16, Charlie went back to Penn where for six years he worked as a farm hand for Captain James Russell. While here, he attended Bloomingdale Academy two winters. Charlie then went back to the home of his parents where he continued living through the remainder of his active years.
He worked for a time at the Morgan Coal Mine. For some years, he worked each fall with the Carter threshing crew. He eventually bought a farm, after which he devoted his time to operating it and his father’s farm.
Whatever his work might be, his reputation was always the same. Whether told by employer or fellow worker—a good hand, dependable, agreeable, etc.
Politically he was a life long Republican, ever posted on the issues at stake and ready to battle with a keen intelligence for his party.
Charlie ministered to his parents through their declining years, with patience and loving sympathy. His father died in 1919 and for 15 years he and his mother lived alone. After her passing on Christmas 1934, he was truly alone in the old home until two years ago he went to his sister’s home where he has been lovingly cared for through his months of affliction and illness.
Charlie was kind, generous, and companionable with every acquaintance who learned to know him well as a friend.
Surviving are one brother, Dee, and wife of Kingman; one sister, Era Summers, of Cates; a sister-in-law, Florence Thompson, of Marshall; five nieces and three nephews.
Extending sympathy to his family are many relatives and hosts of friends. – thanks to S&E
