John W. Townsend Sr., 69, comptroller and treasurer at Loeb's Inc. for many years, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Elizabeth Hospital. He had been hospitalized since April 20 and had been in ill health for three years. A resident of Rt. 9, South River Road, West Lafayette, Mr. Townsend was employed at Loeb's from 1927 to 1963. He formerly was a bookkeeper at the Lafayette Stockyards. He was a member of the West Lafayette Federated Church, West Lafayette Lodge 724 of F&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, and the Indiana DeMolay Foundation. He was active in community affairs and also a Member of the West Lafayette Chapter 507 of the Order of Eastern Star, Knights of Pythias and IOOF Merger Lodge 5. Also he was affiliated with the Kiwanis Club and formerly was active in the Chamber of Commerce. Born in Newtown, he was reared in Fountain County. He was a resident of the Lafayette area for 50 years. He was first married to Emily Fairchild who died in 1925. He then married Gladys G. Draper. She died in 1954. In 1955 he was married to Dorothy L. O'Brien in West Lafayette and she survives. Also surviving are one son and one daughter by the former marriages, John W. Townsend Jr. of Rensselaer and Miss Betty J. Townsend of Lafayette; four brothers, Joseph and Virgil Townsend, both of Covington, Robert of Danville, Ill., and Fred of Remington.   --typed by Walt W

TOWNSEND, John W.—Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Service in Hippensteel Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, the Rev. Morris Finch Jr. officiating. Interment Grandview Cemetery. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Vicki Lynn Townsend of Rensselaer. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Heart Fund.
