Bernard E. Verhey, 81, 603 S. Brady St., Attica, died Tuesday, March 1, 1999 at 1:30 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been hospitalized since March 5th. Born in Fountain County on July 12, 1917, he was the son of August W. and Mary (Serie) Verhey. He attended school in Rob Roy. He had farmed from 1951-82 in Warren County, living near Tab and West Lebanon. After retiring, he moved to Attica. Mr. Verhey served in the U. S. Army during World War II. While serving in Tunsia, he was captured and taken prisoner. He served 27 months as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, Attica. His marriage was to Thelma C. VanDame on September 19, 1946 in Attica. She survives. Also surviving, are: two daughters, Susan (Dave) Pettit of Williamsport and Carol (Patrick) Scowden of Lafayette; two brothers, Harry Verhey of Wingate and Howard Verhey of Attica; a sister, Irene Spence of Attica; three grandchilren, Brian Pettit, Misty and Abbey Scowden. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Frances and Ralph Verhey; and two sisters, Louise Cooper and Christine Pearson. Visitation at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and the Christian Wake Service will be held at 4:45 p.m. Service will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Attica, on Friday, March 19th at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Charles Kline officiating. Interment with military graveside services will be held in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions may be made to the Attica Foundation. – jlr

Attica – Bernard E. Verhey, 81 of 603 S. Brady St, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday March 16 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been hospitalized since March 5.  Born in Fountain County, July 12, 1917 he attended school in Rob Roy.  He had lived near West Lebanon and Tab and after his retirement he moved to Attica in 1984.  Mr. Verhey farmed from 1951-1982 in Warren County.  He married Thelma C. VanDame on Sept 19 1946 in Attica and she survives.  Mr. Verhey was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Attica. He was a veteran of WWII in the Army, serving in Tunisia. He was captured and served 27 months as a Prisoner of War in Germany.  Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Dave (Susan) Pettit of Williamsport and Mrs. Patrick (Carol) Scowden of Lafayette; two brothers, Harry Verhey of Wingate and Howard Verhey of Attica and a sister, Irene Spence of Attica.

Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Maus Funeral Home, Attica and Christian Wake services will be held at 4:45 p.m. Services there at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Charles Kline officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.  Also surviving, 3 grandchildren, Brian Pettit, Misti and Abbey Scowden.
