James J. Banta, 92, formerly of 102 Third St, Covington, died at 7:35 p.m. Monday Dec 4, 1995 at Covington Manor Nursing Home where he had been a resident for 3 1/2 years. He was born in Parke County on March 17, 1903 to Ambrose and Martha E. Sanders Banta. He was married Dec 24, 1929 in Covington to Mary L. Hoagland. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. He retired from Olin Corporation in 1968 He was formerly the Covington Chief of Police and formerly served as precinct committeeman for Fountain Caounty Republican Party for several years. He held memberships in the K of P; Covingotn F & AM; Scottish Rite; Murat Temple of Indianapolis; West Indiana Shrine Club and Fountain County Republican Party. Visitation was Wednesday at Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg. Graveside service at 11 a.m. Thursday Dec 7 at Mt. Hope Cemetery at Covington with Pastor Paul Kent officiating.

He married Mary L. Hoagland, December 24, 1929 in Covington. She preceded him in death. He retired from Olin Corporation in 1968. He formerly served as chief of police in Covington. His memberships included Knights of Pythias, Covington F&AM; Scottish Rite; Murat Temple of Indianapolis and West Indiana Shrine Club. He was precinct committeeman for Fountain County Republican Party for several years. He also was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington with Pastor Paul Kent. Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg.
