Charles R. Barkley, 67, of 712 Jefferson Street, Covington, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday in his home. He had been employed by Lever Brothers of Hammond for 36 years before retiring in 1973 when he moved back to Covington. He was a member of McKinley Masonic Lodge 712 at Hammond; Munster-Highland Elks Lodge, life member of the Covington VFW, Covington United Methodist Church and had served with the Army in WWII. Born June 29, 1911 at Covington, He was a son of Charles W. and Vera Mary Franklin Barkley. He was married August 1, 1932 at Williamsport to Polly Preble who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Barkley of Chicago; a granddaughter, Shannon O'Brien of Chicago and several cousins. Two half-sisters are deceased. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in DeVerter Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Covington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday, Fountain Masonic Lodge 60 will conduct memorial services at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The VFW will conduct military graveside rites. The family has asked that memorials be in the form of contributions to favorite charities or churches - kbz

Services were held Monday at the DeVerter Funeral Home for Charles R. Barkley, 67, of 712 Jefferson. He died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 1979 at his residence.  His death was attributed to natural causes.

  Barkley was born June 29, 1911, at Covington, the son of Charles W. and Vera Mary Franklin Barkley. He married Polly Preble on Aug. 1, 1932, at Williamsport. She survives.

  Barkley had moved back to Covington in 1973 after retiring following 36 years of employment with Lever Brothers in Hammond.
  He was a member of McKinley Masonic Lodge 712 of Hammond and the Elks Lodge of Munster Highland, Ind. He was a life member of the Covington VFW post.

  Other survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Barkley of Chicago; a granddaughter, Shannon O’Brien of Chicago; and several cousins.

  He was preceded in death by two half-sisters.

  The Rev. Tom Wilson officiated, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. Masonic memorial services were conducted by Fountain Lodge 60 Sunday at the funeral home. The Covington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post conducted graveside military rites.
  The family asks that memorials be in the form of contributions to a favorite charity or church.
