Martha Jane Beckley was born in Newtown, Indiana July 21, 1841 and passed away on January 11, 1929. She was the daughter of J.W.C. and Sarah Shultz.  On October 14, 1858, she was united in marriage to James Harrison Beckley and aside from a few years residence in the state of Kansas she has lived all her life in Newtown. To this union were born five children, Sarah Margaret Snider who now resides in Seattle, Washington; James Campbell who resides in Kansas City, Missouri, Edward Burns, who departed this life on December 23, 1927, LeNora Belle Reeves who resides in Bloomington, Indiana and Homer Hixon who lives in San Juan Capistrano, California.  She is survived by 14 grandchildren, 12 great grand children and three great great grand children.
At an early age she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and has always lived a Christian life.  Whatever sorrows a trouble beell her she knew the Lord would restore her and would lead her in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake ... (poem)

Mrs. Martha Beckley, an aged residet of Newtown, died at 7 o'clock Friday morning, Jan 11 at her home in that town.  She had been ill of heart trouble for several weeks and she suffered a stroke of paralysis the Monday preceding her death.  Mrs. Beckley was 87 years old and was the daughter of the late Campbell and Sarah Shultz and the widow of the late Harry Beckley.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Will Reeves of Bloomington and Mrs. Maggie Snyder of Seattle, Wash; and by two sons, Homer Beckley of Los Angeles, Calif and Cam Beckley who now resides at Kansas City, Missouri.  

The funeral was conducted from the Methodist Church in Newtown at 1:30 (11?) o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. GP Burton officiating. Burial was made in the Newtown cemetery.
