Pine Village – Frank Bernarte, 77, a former Pine Village resident, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday July 11, 1999 in Holly Hill Healthcare Center in Brazil, Ind. He lived at 204 W. Columbus St, Staunton. Mr. Bernarte worked for C&D Battery in Attica for several years, retiring in 1984. Born Jan 22, 1922 in Fountain County, he lived in Pine Village area and attended school at Winthrop. He lived in Staunton for 12 years before entering the nursing center Sept 29, 1998.  He married Elizabeth Viola Totheroh on July 17, 1949 in Cates and she died Oct 14, 1968. Mr. Bernarte was a member of Attica Eagles Lodge 2596. He served in the Army as a military policeman and saw action during WWII, serving in North Afrida, Italy, France and Germany . His hobbies were hunting, fishing and music. He played guitar, violin and harmonica.  Surviving are two daughters, Rosemary Swank of Center Point; Shirley A. Bernarte of Terre Haute; two sons, Frank W. Bernarte of Brazil and Carl W. Bernarte of Turner; a sister, Allie Bernarte of Attica and two brothers, Everette Bernarte of Attica and David Bernarte of Veedersburg. - kbz

BRAZIL — Frank Bernarte, 77, 204 W. Columbus St., Staunton, a former Pine Village resident, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 1999 in Holly Hill Healthcare Center, Brazil. Born Jan. 22, 1922 in Fountain County, he was the son of Carl and Rosia Jackson Bernarte. He married Elizabeth Viola Totheroh July 17, 1949 in Cates. She preceded him in death Oct. 14, 1968. He resided in the Pine Village area and attended school at Winthrop. He lived for 12 years in Staunton before moving to the nursing center Sept. 29, 1998. He was employed several years at C & D Battery Co. Attica, where he retired in 1984. He served in the U. S. Army as a military policeman. He saw action during World War II, serving in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was a member of the Attica Eagles Lodge 2596. He enjoyed music and played the guitar, violin and harmonica. Survivors, include: daughters, Rosemary Swank, Center Point, Shirley A. Bernarte, Terre Haute; sons, Frank W. Bernarte, Brazil, Carl W. Bernarte, Turner; sister, Allie Bernarte, Attica; brothers, Everette Bernarte, Attica and David Barnarte, Veedersburg; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Cheryl E. Smith; sister, Isabelle Bernarte; and brothers, Floyd, Joe and Henry Bernarte. Military gravesite services by the V.F.W. Post 3318 of Attica will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Maus Funeral Home, Attica, is in charge of arrangements.
