LAFAYETTE — Velma Catherine (Hinton) Byers, 98, formerly of Attica and had been residing in Lafayette, died at 10:02 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007 in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She was born Oct. 6, 1908 on a farm in Tippecanoe County, the daughter of Edward and Emma Hinton. She married Lowell Byers Oct. 27, 1960 in Attica. He owned and operated a farm in the West Point community for many years. He preceded in death Oct. 29, 1977. She graduated from New Richmond School in 1926. She took great pride in attending her class. reunions, especially during the last several years, where she was invariably the oldest in attendance. She retired as owner/operator of the Allen Beauty Shop in Attica after 35 years. She was president of the Business and Professional Woman's Association for a number of years and was active in the Attica Christian Church. She was active in the Jackson Heights Methodist Church. Following retirement, she moved to Lafayette and became active in the First Christian Church of Lafayette. She took great pride in keeping up with the lives of her sisters, nieces, nephews and families, residing around the country. She had a very active social life, which centered around her church and many friends. She was a constant and continuing positive role model and had a profound effect on the lives of family, friends and all who came into contact with her. Survivors include: two sisters, Oleta Maude Crouse, New Mexico and Mary Burns Lawton, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First Christian Church, Lafayette. Burial was in West Point Cemetery. Maus Funeral Home, Attica, was in charge of arrangements.
