Rose Hill, Ill April 18 – George W. Carpenter died Saturday at his home near Rose Hill at the age of 91 years. He came to Jasper County in 1863, settling on the farm where he passed away. He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Short, April 16, 1871. She died March 7, 1923. To this union 8 children were born: CF Carpenter of Vandalia; JA Carpenter of Charleston; Mrs. Emma Carr of Hidalgo and JW, GA and AE Carpenter, Mrs. Emery Mitchell and Mrs. Henry White all of Rose Hill. Mr. Carpenter who was born in Fountain County, Indiana in 1844 was one of Jasper County’s oldest settlers, having come here in early days when wild deer and turkeys were plentiful. - kbz
