COVINGTON – John E. Carrell, 55, of Rt. 3, Covington, past commander of the Covington VFW, was fatally stricken while working on the Rex Keller farm near here Monday. Mr. Carrell was a veteran of World War II, having served two years in the European Theater. He was a member of the Terre Haute Valley Scottish Rite, American Legion, Zorah Shrine Temple, the Western Indiana Shrine Club and Fountain Lodge. He had been engaged in farming with his son. He was born on June 20, 1920, at Sidell, Ill., a son of Lester C. and Ella Shaffer Carrell. He was married to Barbara Gertsch at Rockville on July 31, 1938. Surviving are the widow; a son, John A. of Rt. 1, Hillsboro; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Ann Lee of Attica; three sisters, Mrs. Sara Herrick of Veedersburg, Mrs. Stella Lewis of Fresno, Calif., and Laverne Decker of Garden Grove, Calif.; two brothers, David of Grand Bay, Ala., and Lester of Brooksville, Miss.; two grandchildren; and three nieces. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the DeVerter Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Dobbs officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery at Newman, Ill. Military graveside rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. CST by the Covington VFW. Masonic rites will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday. – jlr
