  A 33-year-old Attica woman has been charged with murder in the shooting death of her husband Friday afternoon, November 27. Held at the Fountain County Jail is Mrs. Judy L. Cates who is accused of shooting her husband, 37-year-old Garry L. Cates.
  According to investigators, Cates was shot in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol at the couple’s home at 205 West Sycamore Street in Attica. The Attica Police Department received a phone call from Mrs. Cates around 3 p.m. Friday and was asked to send an ambulance to her home because her husband needed help. Police officers took Mrs. Cates into custody when they arrived at the home.

  The victim was taken to Community Hospital in Williamsport where he died at 4:20 p.m. that afternoon. No reason for the shooting has been determined.

  Cates was born in LeJunior, Kentucky, November 4, 1944, the son of Henry H. and Gracie Mae Reece. They now reside in Montgomery. A resident of Indiana most of his life, he was a 1962 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. On November 27, 1966, he married Judy Thorp in Lafayette. The couple moved to Attica from the Lafayette area about six years ago.
  He was a member of Green Bush Baptist Church at Lafayette and for the past six years had worked at Harrison Steel Castings in Attica with the iron and maintenance crew.

  Other survivors include a daughter, April of Attica; a son, Brian of Attica; a sister, Mrs. Candis Graber of Loogootee; and two brothers, Ernest of Attica and William of Lafayette.

  Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Maus Funeral Chapel in Attica with Rev. Jim Chase officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery at Attica. -s-
