Cates, Ind -- Within 60 hours after the death of her husband, Mrs. Sarah E. Cates, 86, died at her home here at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan 30, 1940. Her husband, Alfred Cates, died early Sunday morning, Mrs. Cates, because of her age, had been in ill health, but Sunday evening she became seriouly ill and pneumonia developed. The couple only recently observed their 65th wedding anniversary and the shock and grief over the loss of her husband is believed to have been the principal cause of Mrs. Cates' illness. Mrs. Cates' condition was so serious that funeral services for her husband were postponed. Late Tuesday afternoon arrangements were made for double funeral rites to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Cates UB Church with Rev. LL Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Harveysburg Cemetery and Frank Shelby, Covington Funeral director is in charge. Born March 27, 1853 in Orange County, Indiana Mrs. Cates was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malachi Holowell. She and Mr. Cates were married Nov 15, 1874. Surviving are two sons, Clayton, West Terre Haute and Hary, near Cates, a daughter, Mrs. Gusta Rennick, east of Cates, 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
